They put themselves into a box (see Lindsay Graham) now they wanna get out of the box. Fine it's what I expect from a bunch of lawyers but dont make up excuses that 1. Arent logically consistent ("it's the presidents duty") 2. Unknowable hypotheticals ("Schumer would've done it too") 3. Semantics ("Well when we said that we were actually talking about if the president is a lame duck and the opposite party holds the senate") Just say I know what I said but I only said that because I didn't think this situation would arise and now that it has I've changed my mind.
RBG said that she attacked ideas and not people. Good in theory but people can become very attached to pet ideas and take criticism of them very personally. I am amazed at how well members here limit their personal attacks to politicians and news makers while remaining civil with each other. Practice, practice practice.
By now I am sure Reid and Schumer know they should not have "done it", but not because it was inherently wrong, but because it was bad politics. It just made it easier for the RP to pay them back in kind by taking decisive political action while the cameras are rolling. Our bipartisan ruling political class is generally incapable of genuine partisan outrage. The party bosses count on the little people for that. It's good for fund raising. “In his Washington Post column, Dana Milbank (a friend!) wrote that “if Washington's political culture gets any more incestuous, our children are going to be born with extra fingers’.” Mark Leibovich, This Town, Penguin Books, 2013, p. 213.
The end of his first full term, and here again I’m hearing “fake president”... watch fake President Trump seating another fake Conservative SCOTUS while being re-elected for the second fake term
No. Duly seat another SCOTUS as the Constitution prescribes you to do, while watching Democrats screaming to the sky. Trump is simply doing his job.
Did you realize how wrong you were when you claimed that Gump would be re-elected? He cheated the first time and he's cheating again this time, but this time it just won't work.
Does the Constitution give a mandate? I just think they have a hearing and take a vote. I could be wrong but I have heard a nomination has been confirmed before in 19 days.
Dont confuse me I understand why they're doing it what mostly makes me mad is the dancing around the truth that's plainly obvious this is an opportunity at power. All the rest is just convoluted ways to not say what's plainly obvious and its insulting to ones intelligence. That's my beef generally
The comparison I read earlier is that it's as if the Democrats shot the hostage before the standoff began. They were already pushing to add seats to SCOTUS, so their "threat" to do it now, as if it wasn't their plan all along, but as some sort of retaliation for Republicans following the normal process of filling a vacant seat, is absurd. The hearing isn't even required by the Constitution. Senator McConnell could call for a vote the same day President Trump sends the nominee, at least as far as the Constitution is concerned.
Sure, it's about power. When a President has the majority in the Senate, the Constitution gives him the right to appoint and the Senate confirms. Donald Trump is the duly elected President until 2021. Biden claims we must wait until we have a "duly elected President:. Well... we already have one.
The Justice I believe will be chosen, has already been vetted by the Senate anyway. I believe you are right!
mitch made the rule undoing the rule created by Biden and reaffirmed by Chucky the Comm Chairs. Mitch returned it to the Constitutional norm
LOL! A poster boy for situational ethics caught on camera! That is also what I was talking about. “In recent years, despite thousands of bills introduced into Congress every year, only a small percentage (approximately 5%) become law. Of course, what matters for laws is quality not quantity. But why would legislators bother to introduce so many hopeless bills? What if they are not even designed to pass? What if they are instead designed to make money? The cold harsh reality in Washington is this: the very conditions that are so maddening for most Americans —gridlock, problems being ignored, hyper partisanship — are the very conditions that are most lucrative for the Permanent Political Class. Washington may not be working for citizens, but it's working quite well for members of the Permanent Political Class who profit handsomely.” EXTORTION, "How Politicians Extract Your money, BuyVotes, And Line Their Own Pockets, Peter Schweizer, HMO, NY, NY, 2013, p. 7, 8. Those of us who know that politicians are putting on a show, and that should be almost everyone on this forum, should be able to operate a few levels above partisan hysteria.
Stevens was confirmed after 19 days. I think at least one Justice was confirmed on the day he was nominated, and several in less than a week. Of course that would have been before a big MSM political show was an option.
Yup, and RBG was so convinced that the Democratik Heir Apparent would win the 2016 presidential election that she didn't make the prudent decision to step down while Obama was in office. Sheer hubris...
