I think to answer that you'd probably have to look at how many minorities have ever applied to NASA VS what percentage of the population they represent.
I don't have those stats handy.
Also, lets say there was some racist fool doing the hiring and they saw a "Jamal" in the resume pile and put it to the bottom without even looking at it, I suppose that is possible. What can be done about that? I don't think these politicians we have today sit there and actually try to figure out solutions, its just all finger pointing to make one side so pissed a the other that they forget about policies and they can continue to make ones that don't work.
Anyway, back to the job thing, sorry for the mini-rant. What could be done in that scenario? I'm no genius but I think if this is a REAL issue it should be addressed. Perhaps they can anonymize the interview process somehow. So much of that is done virtually anyway. Hell, maybe the whole interview can be done in VR so everyone looks the same and they can mask the voices. They can still be grilled and asked questions like any interview. Or its done through chat somehow and names are not revealed until after someone is hired. There are THINGS that can be done.
It's lame such a system is even needed but our country is still OBSESSED with color. Many other countries don't care about color and find other things to hate each other about like religion but WE obsess over how tan someone is. But until we reach this point of common sense (not sure if possible because I feel like its going backwards), there should be something done to ensure zero job discrimination.
I'm also aware this would be hard to do with some jobs like MODELING for example.
Anyway, its too bad you saw the control center and the first thought was how many white vs minorities in a room instead of the exciting thing they were doing. I hope our country reaches a point where this doesn't matter and its not an issue and of some control center out there has 15 Asians and one White, nobody will care.

There is not an event in the world that doesn't signal racism to you?

    Got to cold?
Maybe at one time the Sun was bigger and stronger and Mars was the correct temp for life?

Yes, it's an overlooked connected issue. Most habitation will need to be at least partially underground. Interestingly, I am reading, that when solar wind activity is low, cosmic ray activity from outside the solar system is not pushed away and becomes a significant risk as well.

I can't see why not, considering it's basically a waste of money to begin with since a good half of the worlds population is still living in 18th century conditions. Anybody that thinks there's going to be a flourishing tourist business flitting back and forth to Mars been watching waaaay to much Star Wars.

Elon Musk could probably start a colony there now with a thousand people, each paying 10 million for a thousand acres beyond Earth's taxes and laws, the ultimate exclusivity several million miles from Earth's ruined husk

It's a start. I actually think this was a bad thing but I appreciate the crack in the door.

    Indeed!

NASA's astronauts, engineers and scientists [and those of other space programs around the world] are our modern explorers and pioneers in the vast space frontier.

My brother was a NASA scientist at the Houston Spacecraft Center beginning with the first manned Apollo moon mission [he retired after 42 years with NASA.] He and other NASA scientists were also pioneers who tailor-made for their unique needs NASA's lunar sample analysis lab in the Lunar Receiving Building. My brother even learned how to blow glass so he could create special size test tubes. One of his fellow pioneering scientists at the Lunar Receiving Lab later won a Nobel prize in physics.

I posted earlier about the Mars meteorites. My brother was one of the NASA scientists who discovered the Mars origin of those Antarctic meteorites and was their NASA curator for many years.

Created in ignorance and compounded via stupidity .

A water world has temperature moderation.
Loss the water over billions of years what is left is . . .

We need to aim asteroids at Mars to create more mass
and gravity enough to maintain surface water and a
    nicer atmosphere.
    Terraform Mars!

BTW a medical MRI is a spin off from
the days of the Viking Landers. circa mid seventies.
So it isn't just about Mars, but tomorrow's "cellphone" too

    Thus Spaketh Moi :oldman:

Not me I'm race blind. Seriously I'm just tired of other people throwing race up at me. You can't listen to NPR anymore without having the guilt of slavery or feminism or climate change preached to you. There's a one knob on the radio that solves the problem for me though and I use it a lot.

    Africans or African Americans? ...

always been fascinated with the many successful Mars missions ... still waiting to see if any other country can pull this off ...

I would love to see a mission to document all the Russian crash landing sites ... /s

interesting question ... but I think that the cooling of the core of Mars had a bigger effect ...

semi-valid premise as NPR certainly leans left and is primarily donor supported ...

my youngest son is a writer/producer/occasional host/fundraiser/electrician/jack of all trades for an NPR affiliate in a major US city ... I mainly listen to his local feed and they are increasingly leaning 3rd party and featuring independent voices ... they are not MSM ...
