Since this is a POLITICAL forum, I thought we could take a look at ACTUAL policy. Lets start with #14016 I'll be making one of these for ALL of Joe Biden's executive orders so keep your eyes peeled! https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2021/02/23/2021-03874/revocation-of-executive-order-13801 Revocation of Executive Order 13801 By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered that: Section 1. Revocation of Executive Order. Executive Order 13801 of June 15, 2017 (Expanding Apprenticeships in America), is hereby revoked. And here is a link to 13801 https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2017/06/20/2017-13012/expanding-apprenticeships-in-america ------------------------------------------------------------- MY THOUGHTS: Apprenticeships are good. People aren't coming out of college these days with a 100% chance or employment or even a good salary. Apprenticeship gives HANDS ON experience so you don't run into the conundrum of "Sorry, we like your degrees but you don't have the experience". (this is a vicious cycle for many entry level employees) -------------------------------------------------------------- Please share YOUR thoughts on THESE 2 Executive Orders only Anything else will be reported under rule #5 (Trolling and derailment) Trust me, I want to put SPIN in here too, but it isn't fair to the other side and I'd like to see comments from BOTH sides Keep it Civil, this is POLITICAL discussion and thoughts only Thank you
Apprenticeships are certainly good and should be encouraged and developed much more than they are. I'm not sure a Presidential Executive Order directing cabinet level officials to "do something" to encourage apprenticeships is the best approach though and shouldn't have been necessary to achieve something relatively uncontroversial and generally positive. There is also an argument that this kind of thing would be more suited to local and regional efforts rather than national ones. I don't know what EO13801 actually achieved in the years it was in place but I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't the first anyone reading this has actually heard of it. Hopefully the repealing of it is just a small part of much better focused efforts on the issue.
The types of apprenticeship programs encouraged by EO 13801 are substandard and generally only good for the industry, at the expense of the tradespeople that enter into them. I 100% agree that apprenticeships should be encouraged as an alternative employment path, but we shouldn't do it by lowering standards and exploiting workers. While they aren't as eggregiously bad, industry apprenticeships are sort of like for-profit colleges (e.g. University of Phoenix). Lower standards, worse results, etc.
Apprenticeships, aren't usually popular in the arts and vocational skills, that are not usually taught in colleges and universities? What is Biden's deal anyway? Is he just full on TDS mode, and therefore anything Trump was in favor of, must be destroyed and eliminated??
All great comments so far. Loving it! Regarding this comment from the order: Sec. 7. Promoting Apprenticeship Programs at Colleges and Universities. The Secretary of Education shall, consistent with applicable law, support the efforts of community colleges and 2-year and 4-year institutions of higher education to incorporate apprenticeship programs into their courses of study. Given the above text, how does one differentiate from an internship and apprenticeship? I'm just trying to understand it better
Apprenticeship is a form of structured vocational training and education, typically ending with a formal qualification or accreditation. Internship is just a posh term for work experience.
It should also be noted that nationally accredited apprenticeships typically feed into union jobs. Industry apprenticeship programs (like those promoted in EO 13801) tend to discourage unions.
I was hoping to see more replies in here. I guess talking about politics in a political forum is boring to most. I realize this thread is Olympic Wrestling and most other threads are WWE and WWE is more entertaining but come on peeps! This is your chance to shine with NO spin!
Do you have any information on if any of EO 13801 was actually instituted or was it just political posturing? Not all EO make it past the planning stage and there were so many changes at the Cabinet levels in the positions that this EO is addressing that it may have just ended in limbo. In other words - did it work?
That's a tall order. You want me to call every company in the country this EO could have impacted and asked them? Sorry but I don't have that much time (even if I quit my job) I think the easier way to do this is does EO 14016 prove that it DID NOT work?
That's a problem with EO. Less accountability. This is a program that should have been handled through Congressional action so that they could revisit it in committee to assess effectiveness. It should have also been funded through Congressional action - an EO has to steal money from other programs to fund it. Perhaps Biden just felt it was not an appropriate Executive decision and should have been left to Congress. I've never been a fan of EO. They are often short term patches for long term problems.
