I don't understand your first sentence. I am not ashamed either, but these stories document that school children are being made to feel shamed. Here is an article which suggests that White shame may be appropritate: Talking about White Shame or the idea that something may be “wrong” with Whiteness and that there is something “bad” about benefiting from the social inequities that result from Whiteness, may lead to greater efforts in disrupting the systems of domination that promote racism. Such awareness flies in the face of what we’ve been taught about Whiteness as a cultural norm. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/...why-white-shame-is-term-everyone-should-learn
Here is another quote from the PT article. It turns out you can't be a good anti-racist without feeling White shame. We should. If we don’t do the work necessary, as White people, to normalize shame and engage in dialogue that invites — rather than rejects — negative self-evaluation and change, then we continue to perpetuate the myth that racism isn’t really that bad. We continue to cope by telling ourselves this is an exception and return to the colorblind ideology that is rooted in White supremacy. We can’t let that happen. So shame on you for not feeling shame!
There are no legit stories that children are being made to be shamed. Hence my 1st sentence. Use real sources, not RW flamebait sources. So you now link a personal opinion basically stating that not being aware of what white domination has done in our society has not benefitted others in our society. It's not about shame but about being aware of how white have treated non whites. IMO. It's not to shame people or kids as you seem to be implying. Even though the personal opinion used the word shame. Do you not think white have benefitted more in our society over the last 250 yrs than others? Simply because white males made all the rules?
I have ran into ignorant and vulgar people White, Black, and Brown. I have also run into very honorable people White, Black, and Brown.
You are missing the point here. Possibly your brain will not let you see what really is at play. It is not your Whiteness, that is shameful, it is the conservative Christian part, that is shameful. It is your conservative Christianity that is seen in a negative light.
200 years of white people blithely walking through life? They created all of Western civilization in those 200 years, they created the industrial revolution in that time, they uncovered the secrets of the atom in that time, they invented planes, trains and automobiles in that time, they flew to the moon in that time, they invented capitalism and communism in that time, they were the first humans to visit the north and south poles in that time, they invented electronics, computers and the internet in that time, they created the most powerful empire in that time, they wrote some of the greatest literature in that time (mostly in the 19th century), etc.... They did not blithely walk through life, they invented damn near everything you take for granted.
Yeah certainly. Just sick of taking an interest here, an interest there, and finding nothing but progressive advocacy thinktanks every time I figure "hey I'd like to learn some more about music or art; I'll give that a shot next semester". I'm not giving up on my degree but I am going back overseas soon. I had a better life while working and I plan to get my remaining 21 credits online while doing so. When I was gone, all I wanted was to be a citizen in my own country. Now that I'm here, I want the hell away from these people. There is truly a western bubble to which most are blind until they travel, imo.
The comment was specifically about a blithe attitude to racism. Nobody was suggesting that White people never achieved anything.
Absolutely. Agreed. I find that Americans who never left the country have a significantly handicapped world view. I fortunately am very well traveled, have lived abroad in two occasions (for two years and five years), and speak five languages.
They? No. Less than 1% of the entire white population worked on the achievements you want to claim for yourself because you happen to have light pigmented skin. Cracks me up how you think you deserve any more credit for these things than the people around you who have different pigmented skin tone. You rode on the backs of others achievements just as the vast majority of the Earth's population has done.
Because Canadians discuss racism openly and the ranting about a racism poster is mostly a rightwing, white American thing. Gold Trail is trying to address racism given that 60% of its students are Indigenous. Apparently, only four parents have complained.
Right. White male population. All @HockeyDad has done is call attention to the loss to us all of what women and people of color might have contributed if they had been given the chance.
That's not what happened in the Gold Trail school district you cited in your flame bait "news" story about Canada.
I've found that some of those who do go to other countries can be very arrogant and condescending towards the people of those other countries. We were eating in a restaurant in Paris once, and this guy on the other side of the room started ranting about how much better Americans are than the French, and about how much the French owed us. When the waitress came over, I said that guy does not represent us or our attitudes. She simply shrugged her shoulders and told she hears it all the time.
My brain works just fine, thank you. I do have my doubts about yours, though. Shame is a necessary requirement for true anti-racism development. While guilt can lead you to take corrective actions, it doesn’t lead you to examine what it was about you — your beliefs, values, biases, assumptions — that led you to engage in racist actions in the first place. It also doesn’t lead you to challenge the group and systemic forces that perpetuate racism. White Shame, however, does this by 1) reconnecting Whites with the parts of themselves and their group that embody racism, 2) engaging in self-evaluation of their values and morals that perpetuate racism, 3) moving towards a racial self-concept that recognizes complicity in racism, and 4) challenging thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and behaviors that promote Let me link again this article: https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/...why-white-shame-is-term-everyone-should-learn
I think the issue here is that white people are expected to feel ashamed for what less than 1% of white people have done. Does that crack you up too?
Here is a more substantial example: For most parents, the demonization of capitalism is the least of it. They say that their children tell them they’re afraid to speak up in class. Most of all, they worry that the school’s new plan to become an “anti-racist institution”—unveiled this July, in a 20-page document—is making their kids fixate on race and attach importance to it in ways that strike them as grotesque. “I grew up in L.A., and the Harvard School definitely struggled with diversity issues. The stories some have expressed since the summer seem totally legitimate,” says one of the fathers. He says he doesn’t have a problem with the school making greater efforts to redress past wrongs, including by bringing more minority voices into the curriculum. What he has a problem with is a movement that tells his children that America is a bad country and that they bear collective racial guilt. “They are making my son feel like a racist because of the pigmentation of his skin,” one mother says. Another poses a question to the group: “How does focusing a spotlight on race fix how kids talk to one another? Why can’t they just all be Wolverines?” (Harvard-Westlake has declined to comment.) https://www.city-journal.org/the-miseducation-of-americas-elites
