I mentioned that Raft as - Kon Tiki - was probably The Only
book my Old Man ever read.
It's worth revisiting. There a few really good Raft/Sailboat
Books. One by Vincent Bugliosi - And the Sea Will Tell -
Plus a movie by Robert Redford that is probably already
out of print. - All is Lost - { 2013 } Just Redford aboard his sinking
sailboat. No Dialogue.I tried to purchase it a few years ago.No Luck.
I watched it twice the time I rented it.

My mind might be overdue for a tune-up, because this is seeming way more complicated for me to explain, than it should. Since I think you want to focus on a different way of interpreting the expression than as I had used it, let me try to organize the variations.

When I used the sell out term, I was using it as it had been used, in the original post, which is the way people generally mean it. That assessment, by society, takes into account both our own view of the sell-out activity, as well as the place the person, to whom we are referring, holds in society; note that we don't usually accuse a stranger of selling-out. So, there are already many possible disconnects, here. The celebrity/ known person, may view what they are doing differently than we do. Or, they could see their own status in society differently than most of us. When we say a person has, "sold out," we act as if all these things line-up, which is not always the case. That is, if we see someone as having sold out, we assume that the sell-out sees it the same way.

Now, I don't think Snoop considers himself to have sold out, nor do I think that society views his reputation in such a way that we would see his being a fast-food spokesperson as having sold out-- with some obvious exceptions, such as @Montegriffo, for instance-- or would believe that he, himself, must have had a difficult time, swallowing his pride, to come to that point.

Michael Jordan, on the other hand, as a role model for so many, is thought of in a different way. His image is much more dignified. So, doing kind of silly commercials to sell underwear, does appear beneath his station, to my mind. But I feel that, regardless of how he looks at it, because he certainly should have no need for more money, many who watch him put his name behind this product-- unless we believe he is a partisan BVD enthusiast-- can feel a bit embarrassed for him. About this, however, I could be mistaken.

Now, I think you are talking about what I, personally, would consider selling-out, myself. But it is important to distinguish that I do not apply as harsh a measure to others, as I would to myself, at least in some ways.

For example, I long-hoped to be a novelist. And I always intended, once I found an interested publisher, to make publication dependent upon using environmentally conscious paper (my imaginary preference had been hemp paper). You'll have to remember this was long before today's digital publishing. So, back then, had I been offered a deal that would not meet my paper requirement, yet took it anyway, just to get published, I would have considered myself to have sold out. But I don't assume that any other author has sold out, by not using some environmentally-preferable option to standard paper; except for Al Gore: how do you write a book on our planet's fragile ecosystem (Earth in the Balance) and not insist on printing it on recycled paper?!!

So I guess I include the concept of hypocrisy being part of my idea of selling out.

I see what you are saying.
You don't think Snoop had enough principles in the first place to be a sell out.
    That's harsh man.

You are changing my meaning, or you don't think I'm being completely sincere in my deferring to the principles of the alleged sell-out. Would I risk being bounced, for political talk, if I suggested a comparison to the legal definition of conspiracy?

OK, so if you saw some famous race car driver, as an advertising spokesman for Jiffy-Lube oil change (or for Quaker State motor oil), do you think you'd likely feel that the driver had sold out? Now what if, instead, Jiffy-Lube was able to get Al Gore? Do you think that might change your appraisal?

Now if Snoop were doing an ad for some program to quit smoking, or a private clinic that helps people stop using drugs...

No, my goats aren't milked but they do keep the grounds trimmed. I didn't think they would eat strawberry plants. But they love them.

I've never heard of them intentionally being flavorless. Not being facetious, but what would be the point in growing them?
