Simple question -- with NO POLITICAL SPIN in the phrasing of the question! Did you watch the 2020 Olympics? Did you watch all the events, or only some of them? Purpose of this poll question is only to get a feel for how many people watched, watched some, or didn't watch much -- or maybe not at all. You cannot change your one selection, and you must vote to see the poll results, which will be displayed publicly. Feel welcome to elaborate on your reasons for watching, or not watching the Olympics in Tokyo this year -- after you've voted.
No reason to 'beat a dead horse'. I didn't watch the Olympics at all this year, and I've had no interest in which countries accumulated how many of each kind of the medals, etc. It's sad, really, because there was a time when I never missed any of the Olympics -- Summer or Winter! My television is not (NOT) a reception-point for anybody's 'virtue-signalling', revisionist indoctrination, or 'political theater'.
I looked forward to the Olympics with great anticipation but when it actually came I watched very little of it.
I briefly tuned in on the US gal who got the silver in the vault, but other than that I didn't watch any of the Olympics, for much the same reason Pollycy mentioned. In addition, I've stopped watching most other major league sporting events as well.
In addition to skipping the Olympics, I'd already given up completely on the NFL. All this America-hating guerrilla theater disloyalty involving 'kneeling' during the National Anthem, and, suggestions that there should be a "Black National Anthem" finally pushed me over the edge. All this, plus, any athlete turning his or her back while that person's national anthem is being played made me understand that if I watched it, all I'd do is get madder and madder. Who needs that...?
I haven't watched any of the Olympics in decades. I think the last event was the hockey game between the USSR and the USA. That was the first and last hockey game I ever watched, I didn't understand it, but the USA won. I've always been a baseball fan since the mid 1950's, it was the game I played in school and some in the army. I do keep track of and watch some college basketball and football, but the pro game really hasn't interested me. Without some of you all pointing out the Olympics were happening, I wouldn't have even known that.
I really enjoy the Olympics. I probably watch an hour or two each night time permitting and watch clips of some of the highlights I missed during the day. I mentioned this in another thread that the Olympics is less so about the medal count and more enjoying seeing people from all over the world get together for peaceful competition. I think the culture warrior people that complain about the Olympics are just looking for excuses to become outraged. I watched many hours of Olympic coverage and saw very little of it and when I did it was in video clips online. Sit down and watch a 2-3 hour diving event an show me the political outrage. All I see are young people competing giving their all for themselves and their teammates and their country. If you were to do some simple math and take all of the moments you had issues with and divided it but the totally number of hours of Olympic sports at Tokyo it would amount to some figure well below 1% BUT that fraction of a percent is enough to make them boycott Olympics.
I was living in Minnesota during the 1980 USA USSR game, so hockey was a pretty big thing back there, with USA coach Herb Brooks and a number of the USA players being from Minnesota. Caught the first part of the game on radio as I was driving home from work, and then watched on TV as they came from behind and won. Probably one of the most memorable games I've ever watched.
I haven't watched any of it. I stopped watching all sports when athletes started bringing politics into the competition. That has destroyed my ability to enjoy watching sports.
Hockey was never big in Georgia. In fact we've gone through a couple of NHL teams that moved away from Atlanta. I was a Drill Sergeant at Ft. Leonard Wood back then. I remember watching it, but not much else. Outside of the joy the victory brought. Of course if I understood the game, that might have been different.
I probably would still enjoy NHL hockey except that my cable provider has been in some kind of greed-based pissing match with the agency that owns the rights to televised Colorado Avalanche hockey games. Result? No Av's games on cable for two fugging years! A great pity, considering that ice hockey is truly the KING of sports, demanding more sheer athletic ability, coordination, agility, speed, and intelligence than any other professional sport....
Every game live. https://nhl66.ir/simulator I started watching hockey recently because it's one of the few sports I can watch live for free. GO LEAFS
Television has doe two things...it brought sports in to your Den,as well as other venues....no one comes into my living room and desecrates the American Flag!....I watch very little sports any more...no such thing as Amatuer Sports anymore...I will not be forced to watch domething I disagree with..
I used to watch a lot of the broadcast but the protests just take the joy and national pride right out of it. I would rather not watch any of it and avoid the insult.
I watched a lot of the olympics. There were some amazing performances, world records, incredible acts of selflessness. courage on display. I should also couch this as a general love of sports and sportsmanship. I realize that this is the exact opposite of participation trophy culture. And whether it was watching the folks in the pool, or on the track, or alone on a course, the athletes provided a hopeful message that rings true in our world today. We overcome. We improve. We succeed. And it doesn't matter if you're a man, or a woman. All of us can. And that's a message we need more of in our world today.
My only complaint about Olympic coverage is the virtue signaling BS from NBC/comcast/Universal. Endless over hype, and a decidedly poor understanding of the sports themselves, and the participants. Ignoring that, the games themselves were amazing to watch.
I watched 0-10% of it. Basically I watched a few minutes here and there (maybe 3 times) when it happened to be live coverage when I was flipping through. Always was women's sports on when I saw it.
My big nostalgic moment about women's olympic sports came when Joan Benoit won the Gold medal in the Olympics in Los Angeles (1984) From the Wikipedia: "Joan Benoit Samuelson is an American Senior Grand Masters marathon runner who was the first women's Olympic Games marathon champion, winning the Gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles." I could not be torn away from the TV watching this woman's astounding athletic performance, which was truly electrifying! I was so inspired by HER that I went on a big physical fitness kick afterward, and I wore out two pair of Nike running shoes in the process of losing over 25 pounds that year. I even paced my strides and my breathing to be as much like hers as I could remember. Thank you, Joan! Well... that was then... but today, in 2021, I had no interest in the Olympics at all. And, I won't buy another pair of Nike shoes again until it ditches its support America-hating crudball 'activists' who turn American sports into a sickening, jive-ass JOKE.... . Joan Benoit -- A true American athletic hero at a time when America WAS great!
The only reason I ever watch other people doing stuff is so I can better learn how to do it myself. I've never learned anything useful by watching any sport.
