Nine months ago, in the immediate aftermath of the insurrection, enough Republican leaders and Trump White House officials viewed the Trump-inspired attack on the democratic transition of power as an event of such horrifying excess that it was difficult to imagine them normalizing, justifying, and rationalizing it as they had the Trumpian excesses of the previous four years. Yet that is exactly what has taken place in the intervening months. “Republicans initially started down the road to a post-Trump party, as opposed to a Trump party . . . and they backed up in record time,” Larry Sabato, the director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, told me, on Thursday. “They have missed the historic opportunity to put Trump in the past.” The result is that the political crisis today is worse than it was, not better. The unacceptable has been accepted by a shockingly large part of the population and its political leadership.

Anyone here still going to try and claim that Trump is irrelevant and the GOP has moved on from him? He owns the GOP, and he's going to run it right into the ground like he does every other business he touches. I just hope he doesn't manage to take our democracy down with him when he does.

Policy-wise, Biden and Trump voters do express some commonalities. As an example, and thinking about some of the aspects of the infrastructure and reconciliation bills currently being debated in Congress, only two garner less than 50% support from Trump voters: legislation supporting unions through banning “right-to-work” laws and safeguarding union elections (42% of Trump voters express support), and making community college free for all Americans (43% of Trump voters express support). In other words, majorities of Biden and Trump voters express support for several other elements of the infrastructure and reconciliation bills currently being debated in Congress, although Biden voters express stronger support for these issue statements than Trump voters do. In the study, the idea that the “government should work for people” surfaces as a potential compromise corridor for starting a conversation and finding common ground. The opportunity is to leverage this consensus to realize the positive change and action many Trump and Biden voters want.

But these positives are offset by the fact that Biden and Trump voters do not see how working with the other side fits into a bigger picture or translates into benefits for them. If anything, they view compromise as contrary their own priorities. They are convinced that the other side is pursuing an agenda that is contrary to their interests, principles, and values. They are convinced they will suffer personally if the other side has their way, despite the fact that many Biden and Trump voters want many of the same things from government.

Illustrating the extent of the underlying divide, nearly 90% of voters on both sides agree that people like them won’t belong in America anymore if the “other side” has its way, and more than 1 in 5 say they “agree completely” that such is the case.

Those who delude themselves with the fantasy that Trump "owns" the GOP are gonna get a big surprise in 2022, and a BIGGER one in 2024... but do continue to shower the DNC with money so's Trump and his vast horde of selfie-takers don't conquer the known universe.

 

I think the Democrats have already taken democracy down. With the help of the bias news, that made sure they told none of the great things Trump did while in. They lied and made him out to be a racist. Said he did nothing to make America better. Accused Trump of hundreds of thousands dying from this terrible virus. Then bought the election by promising citizenship and billions of dollars to a large part of the population. Not saying Trump didn't hurt himself by his constant bragging, his lying and some of the dumb things he said. Still he got 10 million more votes than he got the first time and more votes than any presidential contender, except for Biden. As I said, Biden did so well by buying the election.

Evan Neumann, 48, was placed on the FBI's Most Wanted List in March and is being charged with six crimes related to the insurrection, including violent entry on Capitol grounds and assault on law enforcement officials.​

In court files, the FBI said that Neumann spent around four hours at the Capitol and verbally and physically abused police officers, including "forcefully shoving [a] metal barricade" into a line of officers before breaking into the building.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has repeatedly used the January 6 event as a talking point for his domestic audience, casting the West as plunging into chaos and the U.S. as "undemocratic" in the way it treated the rioters.

The rightist totalitarian regime of Belarus is more the Trump goon's cup of tea, apparently, and the dictator is happy to use the dupe to malign democracy.

Maybe the U.S. administration can offer Big Al a package deal.
