They got warned not to do so, but they went on with it. Hence a cop fearing for his life and the life of others around him, shot at the white mob. It would have been a blood bath if it violent black or muslim mob would have done this. But it was a predominantly white gang, so the cops only shot ones. And yes, indeed.. I am playing the race card. It fits. A fleeing black man gets shot a heck of a lot more than when a violent white gang attacks cops. That's how it is in the US.
