Including a National one in which every able-bodied male aged 17-49 is, by existing Federal Law, a member. Which renders moot the question of whether or not the 2A applies to individuals or just militias, because a huge portion of the population is already in one! And I would expect equal protection would also force it to be inclusive of women, the non-able-bodied, and those 50 and over.

As for Desantis' idea, I love it, surprised given I live in Florida that this is the first I'm hearing of it.

The Florida State Guard is a civilian-based volunteer force that DeSantis said would assist the National Guard during state-specific emergencies.

During a hurricane, natural disaster or other state emergency, civilians “trained in the best emergency techniques” could be called in through the Florida State Guard to help the Florida National Guard, DeSantis said.

“We also want to make sure that we have the flexibility and the ability needed to respond to events in our state in the most effective way possible. Some of that will require us to be able to have access and be able to use support in ways that are not encumbered by the federal government, that don’t require the federal government,” DeSantis said.

He noted that Florida would be the 23rd state with a state guard recognized by the federal government, joining states like New York, Texas and California.

State defense forces: states with active forces highlighted in green, inactive forces highlighted in red, and states with no data and no prior active force highlighted in gray.

If FL wants to join the Green States that already have these forces in place, they have every right.

Well, you did say just to reallocate those to state troopers.

The dollars would still be spent, why not let State troopers be state troopers?

He just wants to reinstate something that already exists in Florida. No big deal.

Yes, it's in the US Constitution. These militia forces are still subordinate to the US President, however, but states have a right to maintain and keep them. Today these militia forces are usually called the National Guard. It's not really a federal government organization, it is a little bit more complicated.

They're a massive and well funded/supported domestic terrorist hate group that has demonstrated literally thousands of times that they will go anywhere, destroy anything, and hurt or kill anyone that they don't like. Who in their right mind isn't afraid of something like that?

This thread did not go the way the OP thought it would go... which is always entertaining.

Flordia and every other state has that right... some states like mine have already done it years and years ago.

These forces are NOT subordinate to the president, though, the individuals within it are still subject to a national draft should their be one.

'THEY LITERALLY KNOW NOTHING': ‘Former Obama guy loses’ his SH*T in thread about DeSantis ‘PREPARING FOR A BREAK FROM THE FED GOVT.’ for reactivating FL State Guard and ROFL.

Obama was dumber than even Bush, and Biden is dumber than Obama. Trump was like an Orange Rose within the weeds.

    2 things guaranteed

    1. Any pledge for membership would be to an individual, not to a state or idea
    2. The shirts would be brown

    Seen it before...

WTF is wrong with you people?! How in the hell does DeSantis even remotely come close to Hitler? It's the Democratic party that has shown their fascist colors! Some on left has literally advocated for reeducation camps for Republicans!

This is the “unorganized militia” provided for in the 1903 Militia Act (Dick Act). Providing for state militias was necessary for the 1903 act to be constitutional. All states can have state defense forces under the Dick Act and many do, though only a few are armed and trained under arms. But state defense forces are certainly legal and proper under the constitution and the Dick Act crafted to allow for constitutionally federalizing the national guard.

Today's dumb freakout, CNN edition: Is DeSantis forming a "personal militia" in Florida?

"This report from CNN resulted in a momentary outburst of hysteria on Twitter, largely because CNN’s Steve Contorno framed it so dishonestly. "
Dems are wise to fear him.

I am far left. I have no problem with the legality of this. On the other hand, I do find it objectionable, that once again Desantis is using the state's coffers as campaiging slush funds. I also find it ironic that time and time again he goes against conservative principles just for the free publicity.
From using state funds to post up highway signs warning that Florida is an E-verify state (might as well be advertising billboards), to promoting laws that are obvioulsy unconstitutional but make good headlines (the anti riot law for example) (which costs a pretty penny to defend in court); to passing laws that go against the very core of conservative values (anti mask mandate forbidding local government, and local businesses from making their own decisions) and now this militia which means that local taxpayers are now paying twice for the same service.
Notice that almost all the states except for texas with a local guard are democrat leaning states, and all the most fervent red states do not have one?
Desantis is not governing anything or a conservative in any way shape or form, he is just running for reelection using state funds. No principles.

Hitler was more intelligent than DeSantis is. DeSantis's IQ is 1.
