teaching a 5 year old that someone may come in a kill or hurt them in their sleep every night before they go to bed could harm a child

Florida deaths would be about 10,303 instead of 63,569 if Florida had just done as well as BC.

At the time of European contact with Africa about half of Africa was slave to the other half.
I don't see any African guiilt at that - even though slavery still exists in some African countries today.
And of course, there was a huge trade in African slaves to the Arab nations - people sent on death
marches, and men who had their genitals hacked off so there would be no African-Arabs.
And then there's the Europeans who were prized in the slave markets of Africa and Arabia.
Not to menion the Egyptian slaves, the native American slaves, the Mongol slaves, the Polynesian
slaves (some of whom were simply eaten when they were no longer of value.)

So Florida has an issue with slaves 150 years ago? Why should they when every other ethnic group
and nation had slaves until Europeans set out to banish the practice.

 

Really sad that the Republicans in this thread don't want our children to be taught about the evils of Slavery and Jim Crow.

They would rather we deny history.

The school stuff is ginned up BS. Teachers should fight back by taking time to meet with parents about what they do in fact teach. Right now. Get the schools to arrange the timetable for the presentations.

I don’t feel any discomfort for what those who came before did. I had no control over them or what happened, no say whatsoever. History is what it is. Should whites be the only ones to feel discomfort over slavery, no. If you’re going by race, there’s a couple of countries in Africa who didn’t make slavery a crime until 2003, Niger and in 2007 Mauritania. You had the middle east that in the 1960’s finally abolished slavery in the countries of Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Oman, UAE. The United States was somewhere in the great middle of all the countries of the world when it abolished slavery. Slavery didn’t stop in 1865, it continued on after that in half of the countries of the world. All races should feel discomfort. A lot of Asian countries waited until the 20th century to abolish it.


If it is to be taught, the complete history needs to be taught. White Europe lead the way, lead the fight for abolishment of slavery. Every other country sooner or later followed their lead. Fact is the abolishment of slavery didn’t mean everyone is treated equal, here in the USA and in every other country of the world. Discrimination flourishes in all countries and among all races.

 

I tell you from personal experience there's no need to pronounce slavery and Jim Crow as evil. (Three decades of teaching high school history.)

I taught high school students about the Holocaust. The students didn't need to hear me condemn it.

 

Ronstar - even a non-American like me know this:

At the start of the American Civil War no Republican owned a slave.
Lincoln was a Republican and he fought against the Southern Democrats and kept the Northern Democrats at bay.
Jim Crow was a Democrat thing
The KKK was a Democrat thing.

And as for the 'evils' of slavery. I think every nation and every ethnic group in history had slaves. Some, like the Arabs
hacked the male genitals off so there wouldn't be any African-Arabs or European-Arabs. Some like the Aztecs and
Polynesians ate their slaves as well.
And it was Europeans who largely stopped all this.

So please, a little context and hefty dose of honesty.

 

Times have changed. It's not the 1800s anymore. It's not the 1930s. It's not the 1950s or whatever. Times have changed ... for the better. And white people of the present are not guilty of the sins of the past. They just aren't.

I don't think we'd have time for an serious treatment of slavery, but it bears mentioning in some meaningful way that slavery was practiced in many societies.
