https://www.foxnews.com/politics/marco-rubio-bill-aiding-police-homeownership-help I think if you need legislation to get into a house you shouldn’t have the house. People who can’t do a simple task like saving for a down payment should have next to no chances into getting into a house. Why would you want to force banks to take riskier loans on someone who can’t even save for a down. I mean thanks for the public service but you still get paid. We pay them and if they can’t afford it increase their pay a bit but legislation on housing like this is completely moronic.
I agree, if you want to legislate police live in the community they work in, double their pay if you need to, or do away with that restriction.
Neocon Republicans are just plain scum. In the midst of the worst inflation crisis in our lifetime, here they are spending taxpayer money to buy votes from people who already live off taxpayers dollars. They really really really hate taxpayers. What is the point of a red wave if this is the kind of leadership it is going to get us? Just more fuel being tossed into the inflation inferno (along with the 40 billion Ukraine legislation). It really appears that both sides are racing against each other to see who can burn the country down faster.
This is a bipartisan bill. But agree 100% that during a nationwide housing shortage and inflation it’s completely stupid timing just to buy support
Name the "bipartisan" bill that wasn't an utter disaster for the American people. The bill makes no sense. Why are Republican politicians handing out money to Democrat voters? Why are Republican politicians interfering with a state issue? Why are Republican politicians spending federal money when every economist is screaming from their top of their lungs for the federal government to stop spending money? This is a disgusting move in every way. It is politically stupid in that it gives money to Biden voters at Republican voter expense and gives the left a reason to vote for Biden. It is morally repugnant in that it grows federal power at the expense of state independence. The bottom line is that home ownership of state employees is none of the federal government's damn business. State employees are generally in the top 20% in every state with regards to compensation already..... they don't need handouts.
Here’s the lefts fix for housing problems https://www.foxnews.com/politics/washington-socialist-candidate-breaking-into-homes
Sounds good in theory but in reality this is just a way to incentivize urban areas poaching officers from rural areas. It is no different than having a $15 minimum wage when the national MW is $7.25. It is such a bad idea, I am surprised california democrats didn't write the thing.
And all that will do is shift the cost onto everyone else. I am all for helping first responders but do not like this bill per se. No down payment, no PIP, but a UFIP of 3.6%? Uhm no. I want some down payment such as 5%, 6% or even as low as 3%, but not 0, or have not learned our lesson from the 2007 Financial crisis. Personally, I think police officers' and other first responders' pay should be increased, at least 10% initially and 2% points above the CPI average for the first five to ten years of service, thereafter 1% above the CPI average until retirement.
It works the other way around actually. In suburbia, the police officer will usually do their time on patrol for the first few years in an urban police force, and then apply to a suburban police force with better hours and pay. This bill may pass or it may not, but I don't think the banks and insurance companies do not like the idea of no down payment and no PIP.
There are two bills, one in the Senate and one in the House. In the Senate, it is not just police officers, but firefighters, paramedics, and other first responders. In the House bill, they included teachers. Here is the text of HR 3172 SB 2981
It's only what they call first responders, which includes police and anyone employed in the fire department. Teachers are included in the House bill only, but they are not first responders.
