Republicans do. And that's what we've all been asking ourselves since they elected George Jr. When they elected trump, the right wing declared war on America. It was a declaration of war on anyone who doesn't love trump. And that is no exaggeration. Honest to god, I heard on the TV in the middle of the night that George Jr had finally won after the Florida fiasco. I thought I was having a nightmare. I heard it and laughed it off thinking I was dreaming. But then I woke up. And it was just as bad as we all expected. The dolt invaded the wrong country and blew up the Middle East. When they elected trump, in every way that matters, America died. They destroyed the country.
This is not an exaggeration: For a better part of two years after he got elected, anytime I saw an American flag I felt like I was going to puke. I couldn't stand to look at one. I was devastated beyond words. Everything I believed about this country turned to vapor in about five minutes. And I'm not even a liberal. For half the country, trump's election was a betrayal that goes beyond words. And no, the country WILL NEVER recover. I was as patriotic as anyone and now I'd wipe my ass with the flag. It is a symbol of the death of the country I loved dearly.
Too late. Parts of America will go on as a free nation. But the former so-called bible-belt clan clearly seeks authoritarian control. I am just hoping for a break up without a full-blown civil war. It is too dangerous to allow the power of the US military to come under authoritarian control. Someone like trump can never be allowed to have control our nuclear weapons again. Nothing is worth that risk, not even saving the country. Even some of trump's closest military advisors were terrified of what he might do. Luckily we still had a few men willing to stand up to trump. But he almost got rid of everyone who could and would stop him from starting a nuclear war. If he gets elected again there will be no way to stop him. It would be like putting Putin in charge of the US military.
I agree that Trump was a disaster but I have faith that the US voters would not re-elect him. The voters showed a bit of sense here, in Oz.
The trouble is the system has fundamentally failed. Most of all, the system ensures the minority opinion has majority rule through the Senate. The 583,000 people in the red state Wyoming have just as much say as the 39,000,000 people in Blue California. Each State gets two Senators. And nothing happens without going through the Senate. The system is a joke.
The Electoral College is a great mystery to many of us. I understand it’s about representation of states, but don’t see the need
The electoral college system is another issue. The winner take all model used by many States can slant a victory towards a candidate who loses the popular vote. And of course technically, the electors may not vote according to the actual vote from their State. But this issue is about the Senate. In the US Senate, each State gets two Senators. That gives each State equal weight even though, as in my example, each person in Wyoming gets as much of a vote as 66 people in California. The system is a joke.
Just to complete the point, that is why we can't get gun control. The vast majority of Americans approve of a number of laws, like waiting periods, background checks, and age limits, but nothing ever gets through the Senate because it is ultimately controlled by a small minority of the country.
Sorry about that. It's just Frankie Boyle being beastly about politicians. "Boris Johnson says there were contingency plans in case he had died of COVID" "It's true, I bought fireworks".
