Interesting. Is the tide turning? It would appear that former secretary of state and a 4 star general has no issue with gay marriage at all. What fascinates me about this proclamation is that he was a general during the time of DADT. How would this have changed our military if he was still a general and able to work to implement changes? Would you start seeing more marriage equality? This does make the second member of the previous Republican administration to come out publicly and say they do not have a problem with it, the first being Dick Cheney. As it also appears that this is turning into an election year topic, will the tide turn in favor of gay marriage? http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/OTUS...t-gay-marriage/story?id=16416112#.T71hN8WtH1U Two weeks after President Barack Obama declared his support for gay marriage, former Secretary of State Colin Powell told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Wednesday that he has "no problem with it." Powell, who is doing a series of television interviews to promote a new book, endorsed Obama in the 2008 election but hasn't said who he'll back this year. Like Obama, Powell spoke of personal connections in forming his opinion about same-sex couples getting married. "But, as I've thought about gay marriage, I know a lot of friends who are individually gay but are in partnerships with loved ones," the retired Army general said. "And they are as stable a family as my family is. And they raise children. And so I don't see any reason not to say that they should be able to get married." In 2010, Powell, who served as secretary of state under President George W. Bush, reversed his position on the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, saying he supported its repeal. He had opposed gays and lesbians serving openly in the military when he was chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the 1990s.
I always liked Colin Powell. He is a big idea guy when it comes to foreign policy, and is not afraid to show his liberal (or as he would describe himself, Rockefeller Republican) side.
Uh, right, he became irrelevant because he endorsed the man who actually became president? And good for him taking a stand for marriage equality, he knows the bigoted GOP base already hates his guts, he has nothing to lose.
Colin Powell was always preaching to the Republicans to put up moderate candidates, but then he turned his back on John McCain, who is moderate in favor of a far-leftist Democrat, and the only reason being he was black. He lost all credibility with the Republican party at that point, and no one cares what he says any more.
Colin Powell is a moderate conservative. He was sticking to his principles in 2008 by endorsing the centrist/centre-right Democrat Barack Obama over the far-right Republican John McCain. And his candidate became president, whereas people who endorsed the extremist McCain are clearly out-of-touch with modern America.
Colin Powell generally makes these types of sweeping statements whenever his political career needs a boost. Powell became politically irrelevant once Condi took his old job away from him. It's funny how his liberal fans like to conveniently ignore the fact that Powell lied to them and everyone else according to the anti-Bush crowd while pitching the Iraq invasion to Congress.
Trust me, I know. I support Powell mainly for his Rockefeller Republican stances on social issues as well as his theoretical contributions to foreign policy.
I think the 4 Star A$$klown Powell who I missed last night on - Hannity - is bucking for an Obama appointment. He's jealous of another 4 Star General Wesley Clark who has definite political aspiration even running for the Presidency alongside guys like Al Sharpton. Wesley Clark was given a 4th star under Clinton for his faithful execution of waring as U.S. Nato Commander. Who was the last 5 star general this country had. ? And why has this vaumted Title not been seen not heard from in more than a a half century. I say ... on account of how Liberals have infested the waters. Before long a 4 star General will be just another Joe.
Collin Powell is trash in my opinion. He's who urged Bush 1 to not finish the first Gulf War on behalf of protecting Saddam Hussein. A true disaster for this country that cost countless lives and trillions of dollars.
Oh, somebody drug old Collen out to support another Obama stance. Well, it is getting close to election season, so why not... progressives love this guy! He's a real "statesman", isn't he? Never a bad word to say about anyone....lol.....he just flys above us and happens to swoop down whenever he's needed to help Obama or some progressive cause. OH well...
If you do a search, you will find there were 2 Gulf Wars and then could read of the difference between the 2. If the first Gulf War had been concluded with the removal of Saddam Hussein and if the Iraqi military had not been disbanded, none of the resulting chaos would have occurred.
