Gay men serving in the military are eligible to serve in special forces, however straight women are automatically barred from serving in special forces. So gay men living in a state where gay marriage is legal (like Mass.) actually have more rights than straight women do.

So you aren't that persecuted, sorry.

A man and a woman marry, live their entire lives together. The husband dies. The woman inherits the entire estate without paying any inheritance tax and receives social security benefits, and her husbands pension benefits for the rest of her life.

A man and a man marry, live their entires lives together. One of them dies. The survivor inherits the estate(assuming that they named each other as the sole beneficiary), and is subject to inheritance tax- because there is no examption for gay married partners, and the survivor doesn't receive the social security benefits or pension benefits from the deceased partner.

Things have improved tremendously. Great strives have been made. But your obsession with 'gays demanding special rights' seems rather petty. There are still some real institutional roadblocks. Serving in the military just ended- because of 'gays demanding special rights' that you seem all worked up about.

It is okay for people to speak up for their own interests and here in America, we actually encourage people to do that.

Yes I aware of that, however I'm tired of gay activists acting like they have it as bad in this country as blacks did in the Civil War era, they have it better here than in nearly most of the world, but only see "persecution" day in, day out.

    You wanna refute that?

A gay man can serve in special forces, a straight woman cannot.

I see that from old white guys here all the time- complaining about how bad they have it.

It is easy to be tired of any 'activists'. The reality is that huge, huge strides have been made so that gay men are no longer summarily arrested just for 'looking gay' but there are real remaining institutional roadblocks.

How is this affecting you personally?

A straight woman can receive her husbands social security benefits. A gay man can't.

Women and women marry each other, too. Lesbians get left out of a lot of these debates. And, no, lesbians can't serve in US special forces.

But how does that reflect on gay marriage ... at all?

    Are you serious?

If his argument is that in certain states gay men have more rights than straight or gay women using this standard...he's right. Straight women cannot serve in special forces.

It's a weird argument but its an argument.

This should not be the case. If a woman is capable of withstanding the physical, mental, and emotional toll of the special forces, she should be able to serve, whether they are heterosexual, homosexual, or any other sexual/gender classification.

    It's gender-based discrimination.

Yes it is. Not all discrimination is created equally.

No one has a right to be in special forces so this entire thread is crap.

    It is also sex-based discrimination.

I'm completely against women in combat roles, but what surprises me is how many women agree with that. During the 1990's when we had G.I. Jane and the feminist movement in full force trying to makes the case for women in combat, the impression was that being against women in combat was to be 'anti-woman' which is absurd. The Feminazis have waged full war against gender roles, the reality that men and women are different and are suited for different roles in society.

But here's what gets missed when it comes to the military, something understood by those in the military, but it seems nowhere else. Nobody has the right to serve in the military, and those who do sign up have no right or say in how they are deployed. Men and women in the service are assigned military occupation skills and deployed according to the needs of the military. The military exists to protect Democracy, not to practice it. Right now, any woman who is able bodied and meets the requirement can join the military, so no discrimination is being practiced. But to say that a woman has the right to choose what she'll do in the military is to misunderstand at a most fundamental level the military's mission and perogative to defend this nation as it sees best. Putting women in combat would be a grave mistake that would only weaken us.

We already put women in combat. At least two female soldiers that I know of have recieve Silver Stars for valor in combat in Iraq.

The very fact that there is no front line in modern warfare means that women are going to be on the front lines and in combat.

So what's your point that woman also have problems in todays society? I doubt many people would disagree with you there, there is discrimination right across the board that's why many people are fighting for certain rights. I think this is more of a reason to actually petition for this rather than make it a who has it worse argument, it gets us nowhere on the actual issues.

Well clearly they didn't deserve it because women can't be in combat- right?

I knew a woman who was a trained medic and a competition class sharpshooter- 5' 10" and about 160 lbs. I would have preferred her at my back(trained as a soldier) than any of the guys I went to high school with.

Men have more rights than women in the military.

Gay men are not treated differently than straight men in that context.

    Try again.

What more rights do men have than women in the military? We go where the military sends us and do what we're told just like women are.

    You've never served, have you?

Women are barred from Special Forces.

    My argument is pretty simple.

Do women have difficulty joining the armed forces? Are then not equal until they can do whatever they want in the military? Are they paid less because they're not in Special Forces? Do you even understand how the military works?
