I am glad that Barack Obama can be "more flexible" after the elections with the Russians. He really ought to bow, appease, apologize, and give them whatever they want.

What is Obama supposed to do .. stomp his feet and cry like a baby ?

Perhaps if we were not so intent on messing around in Russia's back yard .. they would not feel the need to remind us that they are equally capable of playing in ours.

    Payback's a biyach .. isnt it.

Assuming that this report is even real lets read what the anonymous source said:

    missile submarines, SSBN.

“While I can’t talk about how we detected it, I can tell you that things worked the way they were supposed to,” the second official said, stating that the Russian submarine “poses no threat whatsoever.”

I have my doubts whether this is real. If someone unofficially leaked something like this, they would be facing not only being drummed out of the service, they would also face prosecution.

If it was an official leak- it wouldn't have been done through the "Washington Free Beacon".

The right wingers are so funny. Russian submarines ahve been detected off our coast for decades and have been in the Gulf of Mexico too. To try to make this a "Blame Obama" thing is just so incredibly stupid. I have three thoughts:

    1) If this is all you have to complain about, then you have nothing to complain about
    2) The OP is so blinded by partisianship, that he should be embarressed, but I am sure those same blinders keep him/her from realizing it.
    3) I bet republicans are so dumb they think that Romney calling Russia our greatest geo-poitical foe and wanting to build missle defense systems in thier neighbors would stop this.

    Per the OP's link:

The submarine was identified by its NATO designation as a Russian Seirra-2 class submarine believed to be based with Russia’s Northern Fleet. It was the first time that class of Russian submarine had been detected near a U.S. coast, said officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of anti-submarine warfare efforts.

All it says it that it's the first time that class of sub has been detected. I take that as a success in our detection capabilities. Obviously other Russian subs have been detected in international waters off our coast before.

    So what's yer point??

exactly. what precisely is the big deal here? Is anyone suggesting that Russian submarines do not have the right to be in international waters? Is anyone suggesting that the US has not always kept tabs on Russian submarines anywhere near our territorial waters, or anywhere near the Iceland/UK gap?

Does the author of this thread know anything about the subject at hand? Or is this yet another in a long long line of anti-Obama threads where the author succeeds only in making a fool of himself?

The "source" for this story is the 'Washington Free Beacon' which is published by the 'Center for American Freedom' which is funded by the Koch Brothers. In other words looney tunes. Russian naval vessels have every right to operate in international just like ours do.

It's there in case Obama and Holder need to flee ahead of the Romney DoJ taking power.

then what, pray tell, was the purpose of this thread? Russian submarines operating in international waters where they have always operated... why post a thread about it and bring the president into the discussion as if he has any (*)(*)(*)(*)ing thing to do with what the russian navy does or where it does it?

I'm a bit concerned to note that George Bush's relationship with Putin, their glowing friendship seems lost on the thread's posters. It's like we're back in the Cold War or something.

    *sniffs and wipes tear*

    Ahhhh, Russia, a worthy adversary.

I believe the thread specifically mentioned that it was the first time a Russian sub of it's class was spotted this close to our shores.

Did you actually read the piece?

I'll bet that it's not the first time that a US nuclear submarine has been detected off the Russian coast.

what is remarkable about the fact that a sierra-2 was detected anywhere is the fact that there are only two of them and they've been around since the mid-80's and never did much of anything. What does this have to do with the president?

Perhaps the link is that Obama has cozied up to Vlad Putin by disolving the missle defence shield that puts Poland, the Czechs and other former Soviet states in danger of being reabsorbed by the ambitious Putin. And perhaps this emboldens Russia to bring it's newest class of submarine around in a show of military might.
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/sep/17/missile-defence-shield-barack-obama

I am theorizing here...but it's a fact that Obama has done Putin's bidding in taking down the sheild. Whereever there are vestiges of American might, Obama takes them down.

I would refer you back to my previous post on this subject. Or are you too busy bribing petty Mexican officials to read thoroughly?

Addressing the problem is the first step in solving it. Russia is not our friend. They are allies with all of our enemies world wide and have been the greatest barrier for real world peace. We must challenge Putin at every corner like we did the Soviets. We didn't win the Cold War by ignoring the Communist menace.

I find it troubling when people brush off the recent stunts by Russia. Most people don't even understand the actions of Russia and that is a major problem.

Yes, a missile defense system is needed in Europe. If you fail to see why we need it against Russia, and the advantages it will give us, then you need a major education in foreign politics.

If I were you, I'd probably avoid theorizing on subjects that I knew absolutely NOTHING about. The Sierra class is 30 years old, the Sierra-2 is 20 years old and nowhere NEAR their "newest class of submarine". I can remember reading intell about the Novgorod, and I've been retired for almost 20 years. Moron.

If I were the Russians, the only subs I'd send near the U.S. coast were ones I could afford to lose.
