This is my hometown actually, I can tell you, I don't care and I don't think these meters are a big problem or concern. In fact, most places have them anyway.

Thanks to the meters, it will stop the utility company from having to go on your property to check the reading, and therefore you'd be better off if that is a concern for you.

However, arresting people is going way too far. They should have just gotten court orders.

Why? It's part of my personal SETI project trying to contact extraterrestrials. Broadcast of RF frequency of less than 1 watt, no license is needed.

Okay, good luck using that as your defence in court.

You're too funny, get a map. North Carolina is near 3000 miles from California.

Read what you posted, the laws says "alter, tamper with or bypass a meter", none of those things occur here. While I feel bad for them that they invested in an unreliable method of transmission of information subject to RF interference from any number of sources it's not my problem. Nothing is precluding them from reading my meter which hasn't been altered, tamped with or bypassed.

Presumably they're using standard WiFi or cellular technology, so if you jam it, you're jamming a public frequency that has been reserved for wireless use. You'd have a hard time proving that was inadvertent. And you're probably interfering with your neighbors' Internet and cell-phone reception.

The opposition here is totally stupid. The goal here is twofold:

    1. Saving money on meter reading, which lowers your bills. It also is less intrusive than physically coming on to your land to read the meter.
    2. Automatic, painless conservation -- saving enough energy to avoid building extra power plants, in a manner that users will not even notice. It reduces costs, helps the environment and extends the life of our energy reserves.

Y'all need to stop hitting the paranoia bong.

Right, because switching to wireless data collection instead of physical data collection is a sign of impending dictatorship.... :eyeroll:

No, because being a trusting statist is a ticket to the rail cars and then the camps. You can't possibly know enough to be sure it's harmless. You trust the state. BAAAAAAA.

$th Amendment has nothing to do with it. The meter is not your property. The utility company has a right to read it, or to remove it if you interfere with its operation or their ability to read it.

MY PROPERTY is my PROPERTY. If I have granted the utility an easement or similar then I have no complaint. If not, they are thugs and need to be dealt with accordingly when they enter my land.

Good luck on that. The frequencies are encrypted. But it'll give you something to do in your spare time.

Problem is that it's not your property. And you have as much right to interfere with the power companies right to change your meter as you do to stop someone crossing your property to get to the main road if their property is locked without pathways inside yours. Which is none.

It's amazing that you right wingers clamber on about "rights" yet flat out refuse to adhere to those same laws yourselves.

    Yes they can.

But they cannot cross my land without an easement or similar agreed access.

I have no idea what party has what standing here. I just know what my rights include.

Lefty's simply don't understand how digital signal over RF works. You don't need much power to introduce just enough white noise to boof up the 1's an 0's of a digital signal stream. 50 Milli-watt or less on the other side of the wall from the meter box would likely do nicely. Since the meter itself puts out about a 250 Milli-watt signal, it would be virtually indistinguishable from the meter's signal but enough to bork up the data stream. Since they have to cut the power to the house to change the meter, a simple circuit that doesn't let it turn back on if the power goes out would work nicely. They would replace the meter and it would work fine......right away.
