German culture wasn't so very far away in the first place. After WWII, the U.S. dominated Japan, instituting cultural reforms and practically rebuilding the Japanese infrastructure from the ground up the way U.S. leaders wanted. Not to mention the fact that much of the 'old guard' in Japan committed seppuku or harakiri upon defeat.

In today's world, the same strategy is not possible. If we were as decisive, and insensitive, as we were during the WWII period, our worldwide PR would be even worse than it is.

Mainly, with the exception of Kurdistan, the major religion was Buddhism (mixed with regional traditions, such as Shinto in Japan). Buddhism lacks a geopolitical agenda, unlike Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. As long as powerful Imams are facilitating a culture of anti-Americanism, positive reformation will be a challenge.
