Smell that? That's the smell of Freedom in the air. Government is becoming irrelevant. 3D-Printed Gun's Blueprints Downloaded 100,000 Times In Two Days
Congrats to the freedom fighters. For those who don't wish to dig into the article, here is a direct link to download them: http://defcad.org/
Awesome. I suppose there are 100,000 3d printers ready to print out really inaccurate pieces of plastic of various tolerances, materials, and densities into which there are undoubtedly 100,000 Americans moronic enough to put a live round and fire it? I am amazed at how foolish this country is becoming, where folks would even consider blowing off a finger or losing an eye over these things. - - - Updated - - - Probably none, but that won't stop folks from owning their very own Solidworks part file that they can do nothing with.
Comical. Irrelevant? Since when? To most neo-cons isn't this the "lowest point in American history" right now?
Most people download these things as a way to disseminate information as widely as possible and make it that much more difficult for governments to stamp out. Others will look at them and improve them. As 3D printers become cheaper and more powerful, there will be far better versions of this crude beginning.
I'm waiting for the NRA to come crashing down on 3D printing guns the same way the music industry came crashing down to internet piracy.
Probably very few. But a group of people can pitch in a little and buy one. The printer would be grouped owned.
More so than that, folks will probably hold onto them just in case it's taken down. So if the time comes and they can buy a 3D printer, they already have the tools to make them. Moreover, the Pirate Bay created a torrent to download all of their 'links' so you could hold onto them (http://torrentfreak.com/download-a-copy-of-the-pirate-bay-its-only-90-mb-120209/). If the Pirate Bay ever goes down, the links are still available to you.
3D printing, AKA "additive manufacturing", can also be done with metals. "Laser sintering" is used when doing additive manufacturing with metals. Watch. You might learn something.
As I understood the concept you are actually able to download the full blue print, which means its use is not limited solely to 3d printers...
I'm not all that old, but I can remember at one point being the only person I knew that had a color printer. I believe sometime in my lifetime these 3d printers will be as widely available as color printers are today. They're already down to about $1,300 at Staples.
This will be very useful on extended space flights because the crew will be able to make replacement parts in space and on the moon and on Mars. School kids should start working with the 3D printers because this will be a major field in the future. Of course their parents might experience a jump in their utility bills as a consequence.
This opens up a whole new field in chemistry. The demand for super-strong plastics is wide open. A person could become a billionaire if he could develop such compounds. Imagine military guns made completely from plastic.
No. Only a low information voter would equate this with Karl Marx. A group of people choosing (not forced by a government entity) to all pitch in so that a product manufactured by a corporation could be bought on the free market for the sole purpose of making a firearm has nothing to do with Marxism. It is actually the antithesis of Marxism. Get your head out of the sand.
It is really silly to argue about the price of a 3-D printer. Factual history tells us that if the technology exists and, if it is useful, it will be developed until everyone will have one. Being armed will be the ONLY way to protect one's self and loved ones. You can't get rid of things by banning them when the knowledge of such items (and in this case how to make them) exists and will become ubiquitous.
