What if America's enemies are actually smarter?

For what it's worth, I will concede that some nations were better off with British rule, however.

India became quite a mess shortly after independence, and the later creation of Pakistan and Bangladesh took dysfunctionality to a new level.

So, while oppression is characteristic of British rule in many areas, the alternatives have sometimes been even worse.

India's own caste system wasn't exactly very compassionate either.

 

No it isn't called Democracy ... Not that it would matter if it was, since we don't live in a Democracy.

Funny thing about nukes. Once you use them you've lost. Sounds strange but there are three options if we used nukes on a non nuclear power just to get our way. 1-A cabal of horrified officers and congressmen would stage a coup and the perps would be lynched. 2-Nuclear powers would see our country as insane and would launch a preemptive strike against us that would probably trigger WWIII. 3-The people would attempt to revolt and would have have to be controlled by martial law and police state tactics resulting in a fascist dictatorship. Maybe all of these together. We lost in vietnam because the leaders did not completely assess the resources available to America. That includes our willingness to fight a long term meaningless war that costs lives and treasure. We don't really have that dedication because we are a democracy. Nor should we. A fascist state could do much better because there are better controls on propaganda, information, dissent, and the electorate. Altering the electoral process to negatively impact the opposition also helps. Oh, Right! Maybe that's why we stayed in Iraq and Afghanistan so long.

 

Yea I've been to vietnam too, the 1st time I went there whitemen were still quite a novelty to the chicks there much to my surprise, cause I thought they had enough of G.I.s back in the days, turned out they still pointed at cha and titter silently. Ok I digressed.

I think the United States (and many other countries) always struggled against enemies that didn't wear uniform. Look at Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam etc. They had no problem when they actually knew who to shoot out. A survey shows Americans view Iran and China as the country's greatest threats today. However, I would say the United States' worst enemies are not conventional militaries anymore.
