Interesting is a gross understatement imo. It's an extremely important and timely academic piece. One cannot understand the truth as to what's happening in Ukraine without the context. This piece contributes greatly to that understanding.

The American public has been subjected to a ceaseless barrage of pro-imperialist propaganda by a servile media. The fascist thugs of the Right Sector and Svoboda are portrayed as crusaders for democracy; Russia is cast as a powerful imperialist bully bent on conquest; and Washington and NATO are depicted as selfless defenders of small nations.

Further, the initial violent coup led by right-wing and fascist parties and orchestrated by Washington and its allies, was disingenuously portrayed as a mass popular democratic uprising. What the following academic piece http://www.informationclearinghouse....ticle38441.htm illustrates is that the context underpinning the crisis in Ukraine, and the role the servile media plays in misinforming the public and therefore helping to perpetuate the said crisis, cannot be fully understood without taking the factors described into account.

It is true that the Putin government rests upon a corrupt layer of oligarchs who enriched themselves by looting state property after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. However what is solidly underplayed in the media is the fact that he is confronted by a relentless threat from US and European imperialism from a position of weakness. This is the point Seamus Milne makes in the Guardian article I cited, namely that Putin's position is defensive rather than offensive.

While resorting to military maneuvers and appealing to Great Russian chauvinism, Putin is nevertheless desperately seeking some means of accommodation with Washington. But US imperialism has shown no desire for a compromise. Having steadily encircled Russia with military bases, a missile shield and the transformation of former Soviet bloc countries into NATO members, it is determined to eliminate Moscow as even a regional rival and turn Russia into a semi-colony.

The truth often overlooked in relation to this crisis is that the underlying cause behind the unrest is the contradictory position of Ukraine's ruling class. Former president Yanukovich represented the section of Ukrainian capital in the industrial belt that remains tied to Russian markets, while the former opposition parties -- Tymoshenko's Fatherland and Vitali Klitschko's "Punch" -- represent the western oligarchs who see their future within the European Union.

In both instances the different sections of the ruling class have sought to align themselves with a social base. The western oligarchs pretend to represent workers' democratic aspirations and appeal to Ukrainian nationalism, while in the eastern belt oligarchs claim to be protecting both Russian minority interests and industrial workers from the "market". The losers in this game of imperial chess are the mass of poor people of Ukraine.

 

So, in addition to being a conspiracy theorist, you're also a racist...

Perhaps the only humorous aspects of this whole episode between Russia and Ukraine is how Leftists such as Milne have come running to the defense of their old comrades in the former Soviet Union.

Obviously, Milne has been drinking the paranoid Kool-Aid that Vlad the Invader's propaganda bullhorns have been brewing to whip up war hysteria in Russia and legitimize his revanchist aggression.

It's always tempting to view the situation from a partisan and Manichean perspective. However, real life is is more nuanced and complex than how you are depicting it.

 

And it appears that Milne and some of his partisan comrades have succumbed to that temptation.

On the other hand, I must admit that I find it surreal in the extreme to be witnessing and reliving the same (*)(*)(*)(*) that went down in 2008 when Putin instigated his revanchist aggression in Georgia.
