The sign? The two simply pointed at each other. "That's a gang sign?" Jon Stewart asked on "The Daily Show" on Wednesday night. "All this time, I've been the lead-in to a notorious gang member." He then showed a photo of Stephen Colbert of "The Colbert Report" pointing at Cardinal Timothy Dolan. But in Hodges' case, the simple act of pointing led to a report on local news claiming she was flashing the "gang sign" and, according to one law enforcement official, "showing solidarity with the gangs." The station had been tipped off about the photo by local police shortly after Hodges publicly called on the department to root out bad officers. That led Stewart to conclude that the issue wasn't about the mayor using her index finger to point, which has since been dubbed #pointergate. It was about the police pointing a different finger at the mayor. Yes... the middle one. IMO: To a white racist, any pointing of fingers, or casual conviviality with each other, is diagnosed as code for what blacks are thinking but afraid to say out loud. Any untoward movement of hands, body are interpreted in different ways by racists. That is why republicans giving a speech are careful to cover their thumbs and are cautious not to point with their index fingers because it might classify them as pointing a gun, and we all know the republican party is an all white political party that has little or no messaging to send to the blacks. Body movements, up to and including hands or fingers have long been a great communicator of what the person is trying to say, and are a source of amusement, anger, frustration, deception, or love. Or, as in the case of Justin Bieber who can do all five in one shot, before grabbing his crotch.
And to a liberal, a black robbing a liquor store while pistol whipping the clerk is innocent and should not be approached by the police because that is, you know...racist.

..... As you can see, Washington politics is consumed with more than bad manners. Bad manners does nothing to educate wild jungle animals, and we need a return to respectful, ethical, and return to dedicated politicians with a plan to work for the citizens of America, not against them. We have had six years of bad manners, sleazy back room plots , and government shutdowns by republicans. The election brought home the fact that you cannot change a wild jungle animal that has no ethics - and wild animals don't understand good manners.

The gangster was flashing a gang sign and the politician who wanted her picture taken with a thug was joining in. President Obama went to Rev. Wright's church to get "street cred" and this politician is reaching for the same. Venue is everything. I remember the debate where Barack Obama pointed at Sen. Clinton with his middle finger and people said he was flipping her off. I don't think he was and I think reasonable people can see the difference. And, although you forgot to mention it, the hand signs can also be indication of gang affiliation or association.
