This whole topic would go away if it weren't for the consumer. Demand drives business. If people felt it were unethical to operate on Thanksgiving they'd quit shopping and generating demand for products on Thanksgiving. We have ourselves to blame.

    Come on now, serious?

I think you can use your critical thinking ability to seperate retail stores from all of the above that you listed. You might even notice a difference in matters of necessity and manpower required to operate such services, thus discerning your argument useless.

Manning a fire station with 10 fire fighters in case of emergency seems like a different matter than Wal-Mart bringing in 50+ employees so you can buy your brat third cousin a plastic toy imported from China, which he will certainly break within a week.

It's very sad that some companies really decided to deprive holidays from their workers! It's sad not because they will rest much less. It's sad, because we begin to forget about our ancestors traditions! Thanksgiving is a family day, not workday!

Good for you and standing up for what is right is a good thing, just so ya know it will change absolutely nothing.

They have more choices than ever. The newest choice is to not work. Rep. Pelosi was bragging about freeing people from the drudgery of work. And, they can always look for another job. Of course, it does help if you finished high school and, as an added bonus, can read, write, and do basic math. But, hey, you can't have everything.

I would like to add to the list of businesses open on Thanksgiving that might be more familiar to liberals.

    Massage parlors
    Strip clubs
    Bus stations
    Bars
    Homeless shelters
    Free food

And it's merchants' decision whether to be open or not. People should stop telling others what to do.

Don't wanna shop on Thanksgiving? Then don't.

Boycotting is a great way to tell merchants how their potential customers feel about those decisions. And what's wrong with rallying others in your community to let merchants know how you feel about their policies?

Consumer spending accounts for approximately 70 percent of all economic growth. For those complaining about all the advertisements, employees having to work over the holidays; you need to understand this is the period of time that will make or break a retail business. They operate on very narrow profit margins in order to pass savings to you...the consumer.

Retail needs to keep their labor costs low as a result, and needs to be open when consumers are available to shop...typically this means holidays as most have the time off.

If a business closes over the holidays, while a competitor remains open...they will lose business.

    LOL!
And they'll be the same ones who bemoan the holiday itself for being 'racist' against American Indians. That is, until someone wants them to work on that day.

I do all my shopping online, but there's nothing greedy about it. If you don't want to work on Thanksgiving don't work there. I'm sure they can find people to replace them. Plenty of people have to work on Thanksgiving. Do you think the hospital shuts down?

I don't believe for one second that people are being forced to work under threat of dismissal. When I was working, people signed up to work holidays and there was never a shortage. In fact, those with low seniority who wanted to work holidays were disappointed because those with tenure were first to get the opportunity. Those who worked were rewarded in ways other than double and triple time, too. They were usually fed catered-in food or given gift certificates.

I only go there for the occasionally electronics part I need which are few these days because newer electronics are not user servicable and RS doesn't carry nearly as much as they used to do. Of course that means I am usually spending less than $5 bucks and I am usually the only customer in the store.

Do they, though? Can you show that the same person is complaining about both issues?

Personally, it is a non-issue to me. If you take a job in the service industry, inconvenient hours are to be expected. My first job, and the one I maintained throughout high school, was at a duty free liquor store on the U.S./Canada border. We were closed one day of the year (Christmas Day). And, being the youngest person there, I did not get my choice of shifts. So I worked Thanksgiving, and Easter, and New Years, and so on. And if I did not want to work that job, I was fully entitled to get a job elsewhere.

I think there are three NFL Games on TV Thursday, assume all the players, the literal millions that will watch all three on TV or attend the games are being forced...Good grief, if you don't support corporate activity, don't shop/participate. You can always go online and shop all day and very few if any of those employees, will miss TG Dinner...I doubt many employees are actually forced anyway, the extra pay will help, but most simply hope their employer does well....

Hubby is a pilot. It's pretty much a given that he will work most holidays. We just celebrate on a different day.

Holidays are mostly stupid and arbitrary anyway so I don't have a problem with it.

Hello, My name is Rexxon, and I'm a liberal.

But I have to say, I don't have any problem with businesses open on holidays.

Realistically, it's not like the world stops just because we have a holiday. And holidays are a great opportunity to get more pay through holiday pay, catered lunches, etc. Usually, there are more than enough volunteers, and rarely have I ever been FORCED to work a holiday.

I won't have to work Thanksgiving this year, but I may have to work Christmas. And although it would really suck if I did, it's not worth losing my job or getting written up over.

How pitiful. The thread is about working on holidays. I suppose if you want to start a thread on leisure activity we could have a discussion. I suppose for some people a day off is a confusing concept. You have to have a day on to have a day off, don't you?

People seem stuck on the day, eh. Many families celebrate on the day of their choice. Seems things can be moved around without complaining.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but is that Rich Mullins as your avatar ?

Meh, seems a little crazy to be open on those days honestly...however it's up to the people who go shopping whether this "greed" is allowed to stand or if it falls.

If people actually go to these stores on those days, then they are complicit in forcing these people to work. If noone comes shopping, those companies wont do it next year.
