We dont worry about Jill. There will be a line of us wanting her to live with us.

True but I think if given the choice as it with any other limiting condition...they would rather be able to live a "normal" life (whatever normal really is). I have a cousin who is 51 years old with Down's Syndrome and he is the sweetest person you will ever meet. He remembers the names of all his cousins and greets us by name when we see him. However, now his 80 year old mother is worrying herself sick about what will happen to him when she's gone as she doesn't want the other kids to be burdened with him...though any of them would gladly take him into their homes!

Hmm that comes down to a matter of opinion I guess. I think that while they may be gifts to many, that gift could be even greater if given an equal chance. Just my 2 cents.

They need to let her know that it would be an honor to have him.

My aunt knows this and is glad.

Yes, that is sad. Each one needs a payee to manage their $ for them. I'm kinda surprised that isn't being done.

Absolutely! If a person can be given the chance to enjoy the full quality of life like the rest of us, then so be it. They should have it.

of course you can't make a real argument, you don't have a leg to stand on

there's no good reason for allowing children to stand on dogs

Unlike some, I dont think its up to me to decide what the definition of a full life is. Maybe some like their lives the way they are.

Oh believe me they have already told her numerous times. One works with developementally disabled kids, one is a registered nurse and one is a teacher. They take him for vacations and weekends but she doesn't want them to be burdened with David for the rest of their lives. I'm guessing it wasn't easy raising a Down's Syndrome child in the 60's - 90's.

Id venture a guess it still held a stigma in the 60's and most of the 70's.

No thanks. Ive read enough. I maintain that its not up to us to play god or to decide what quality of life means to others.

God gave mankind the intellect to take care of ourselves and that includes the knowledge that's out there, some of it undiscovered yet in medical science and the human body/brain.

If medical scientists can uncover the reason for schizophrenia, bipolar, autism, downs syndrome, parkinson's, dementia and all other forms of mental disorders and do away w/each and everyone of them so people will be born w/o these disabilities ..... why not?

You cant be born with downs then "fix" it. I dont think it should be either. I also think leg lengthing for little people is wrong. I also think eye surgery for downs kids is wrong.

She's a lib. They can't possibly have a problem with that.
In fact, while I am sure this was covered already.... PETA awards her "Woman of the Year" after posting an identical pic.

    It's different.... she's not a Palin.

Well, what you think really isn't important to these people. What matters is what would be best for THEM since they're the ones living their lives.........

As far as Downs can't be 'fixed'.... well, neither one of us are medical scientists, so who knows what will happen in the future......

Have you ever known anyone w/Parkinson's? I have a friend who's in the last stage of it and what a heartbreak. Hopefully, someday those brilliant men and women in the medical field will find a cure for the godwawful debilitating disease........

Where did I say what I think if important? I didn't. You were going on about what you think shouldn't be done, like leg lengthening and blah, blah......

Never said DS is debilitating and it isn't. DS children's nature is of a very loveable one and they teachable to a degree.

Well yes, millions of people know someone w/Parkinson's....

Every person with severe mental or developmental disability is entitled to receive either social security disability (from their working parents) or SSID. The trick is that they cannot have more than $2000 AT ANYTIME, so that, while saving small amount may be a good idea (i.e., to save enough money to purchase a new tv, or to buy clothes), it is certainly NOT recommended to save more than $2,000 or they lose their benefits (including, possibly, their medicaid!).

In addition, most people with disability who work in grocery store, or hardware stores are in "protected employment" and do not have full time work, and work generally less than 15 hours per week. . .at minimum wage or lower. Many spend their small paycheck on candy bars, alcohol, or are being taken advantage of by "friends."

Personally, I found it much easier and healthier to let a family member or a professional support person. The county usually doesn't want to deal with being payee for hundreds of disabled people. . .and unless they are legally "conserved," even disabled people who are over 21 have the same rights as adults to lead their life.
