A safety net for the disabled is acceptable, but we've gone way beyond that. There are millions of able-bodied people receiving disability payments in America.

Why work if you can hire a lawyer and a doctor to get you on the government disability payroll?

Many people with disability can not prove their disability. Many people with disability do not realize they have a disability.

Many people can work but have to strain themselves beyond normal effort.

    I have Depression plus Asperger's.

Would that we were as wise and generous. We decide to use private enterprise to do government functions (such as insuring the health of the citizenry) and waste many multiples more than would have been spent and sink to the bottom of world health statistics. Stupid!

You were extolling the awesome happiness of some countries and I was simply point out a possible reason why.

As to my source... I have no idea why the US isn't listed, I simply googled "country using the most antidepressants" and there it was. Of course now your getting into the issues that we always run into in any debate. Which person's source is accurate. It happens with everything. One person throws up some info and another throws up contradicting info and of course both sides think their info is correct.

Unfortunately we live in a world where people will manipulate data to get the answer they want.

Educate please...How can a person have a disability that can't be proven?

If a person doesn't realize they have a disability is it a disability? (Assuming we're not talking about mentally disabled here)

Contrary to belief we are all not created equal. Some can run faster than others no matter what, and some are a genius from birth while others are not. For some this means they have to strain "work" harder than others to accomplish the same thing. It is life and human nature. Most of the time not something that should get you benefits.

So who's to blame? The employee, the employer or the industrial relations laws?

If you're unemployed and desperate to work, you'll take what you can get. That's not being a freeloader by any stretch of the imagination.

Some people are simply lazy. They have no desire to stay in school, improve their skills, show up on time, etc. Those people get what they deserve ... minimum wage jobs. And they shouldn't expect society to bail them out by doubling their wages.

US prisons are some of the worst in the World -- especially Supermax prisons. In Sweden prisons are better but still not "luxury". Few people commit crimes there due to the fact that they have medical

Some people meaning 5%? 10%? 20%? You'll find most people want to succeed, therefore do their best.

What I find interesting is you mock a guy who's on a minimum wage, doing his best, while you'd mock a guy not working and drawing unemployment benefits also. What is it?

I like the idea of free secondary education for all our kids (those who meet qualifications at least) because being in poverty is like a trap. You may be hardworking and very bright, but you may not be able to afford to get that university education that can make a huge difference on whether or not the poverty will be perpetuated generation, after generation. Our university tuition prices are getting out of control too. It's getting so that middle class people cannot afford college for their kids. That's pretty bad. Getting a scholarship is like winning a lottery too. A lot of good kids are overlooked.

Why not? Why can't anyone just it walk in and get free education, healthcare, a drivers license, maybe have a baby or two and live off the govt?

Seems rather bigoted and racist of them not to allow anyone in that wants in, right?

They are trying to support a family on a wage that is meant for unskilled kids. They made the choices either to have families before they could afford to support them or not to get educated past the basics. Now they are living with the result of their choice, unfortunately we are forced to pay for their lack of thinking about their futures.

Behind bars line is not luxury. Even in Sweden, where conditions are much better then in USA.

I mock anyone who isn't doing their best. But a reasonably intelligent adult should not be in a minimum wage job. That's a huge underachiever.

As do we, yet it doesn't stop our leaders from allowing millions more in a year, and anyone who wants to stop it, is called a racist. Why aren't people calling Sweden racist for preventing people from getting in?
