They drove around his house carrying rebel flags.

They yelled racial slurs at them.

They threatened them with a shotgun.

All because he was black.

Now they are going to jail.

The sobbing, crying faces are priceless.

If they have video of the incident and video of the trial that would make it difficult for this to be a conspiracy. Perhaps they were out on bail.. or.. aren't people who are arrested but not convicted kept in local jails; hence not under the control of the Georgia Department of Corrections.

I can see the shotgun and racial slurs part, but what's wrong with flying the Confederate flag? People have the right to free speech.

I read the story as 6 years for the female and 13 for the male. Probation / parole extends it?

A Douglas County judge sentenced the defendants to a year longer in prison than the state was seeking. He sentenced Torres to 20 years, with 13 to serve in prison. Norton was given 15 years, with six to serve. Upon their release, McClain ordered them to be permanently banished from Douglas County.

Yeah. It's likely they could be released even before that.

 

You know, I've heard people say that this is a free speech thing and their punishment is a bit excessive. Well, yeah, I could agree it was a free speech thing if all they did was go up and down the street a time or two flying their flags.

But................they couldn't let it sit at that...............

They also decided that it would be appropriate to shout racial slurs, as well as pull a shotgun and threaten to "kill all the n-gg--s". At that point it time, it became much more than just free speech, because now there were credible threats, as well as harassment going on.

Me? I think that this punishment is a good one, and I hope that all the other idiots considering doing something this stupid reconsider before acting.

 

There was more to the story. The group went through 2 counties assaulting and threatening people.

It also sounds like some police officer should be disciplined for not doing their jobs.

 

No-one was assaulted, hurt or physically injured in any way. All they did was drive around town, harassing and threatening people.....blacks I assume. It's wrong for sure. But thirteen years in prison for being drunk (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)s? I can see, confiscating their trucks, a heavy fine and maybe six months in county. Oh well. Maybe their lawyer sucked.

YOu don't think pointing a shotgun at a bunch of 8 years olds and their parents isn't worth 20 years? It's called a threat with a lethal weapon. If any parent at that party had been carrying a concealed weapon, they would have been in their rights to kill them.

 

I think that was the real reason for long sentences, at first the police refused to charge them, so now they are trying to show they are tough on hate crimes

If you're pointing a shotgun at somebody and threatening to kill them, it's assault.
