It began Friday evening when in front of a nearly all white crowd in Alabama, Trump said that players who take a knee during the national anthem -- who just happen to be black -- are sonsabitches and he called on owners to fire the black players. Then he asked Americans to boycott NFL games. The reaction was swift and overwhelming. Instead of nine players taking a knee during the anthem, 204 players took a knee. Several players from the Oakland Raiders, Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, New York Giants, Detroit Lions, New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons were among those who chose not to stand for the anthem. The Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets, Los Angeles Chargers, Green Bay Packers and Washington Redskins stood with arms locked, though some players from those teams chose to kneel. The players were joined by coaches and owners in solidarity. The Steelers, Seahawks, and Titans chose not to enter the field during the anthem. Protests, some violent, broke out in stadium parking lots across the country. Trump was asked why he paid so much attention to the NFL over the weekend while the devastation in Puerto Rico didn't raise a single eyebrow. There wasn't even a vote on Trump's fabled repeal and replace Obamacare bill. It is now dead as far as this year is concerned. Trump seemed confused about it all. “We will have the votes for Healthcare but not for the reconciliation deadline of Friday, after which we need 60. Get rid of Filibuster Rule!” he tweeted. Now that raised eyebrows. No one is quite sure what he is talking about. Senators Graham and Cassidy, authors of the bill, said they didn't have the votes. The actual number of votes was a simple matter of third grade mathematics, but that seemed beyond the skills of our President. Trump also was confused about the whereabouts of Sen. Thad Cochran. Trump said the good Senator was hospitalized. Senator Cochran was home recuperating from a urological issue. Trump threw his clout behind Sen. Luther Strange of Alabama. He tweeted, "Luther Strange has been shooting up in the Alabama polls since my endorsement. Finish the job - vote today for "Big Luther." ALABAMA, get out and vote for Luther Strange - he has proven to me that he will never let you down! #MAGA" On Tuesday Strange lost to his opponent, Roy Moore, and by a wide margin. Trump took down his tweets regarding Strange. Trump desperately wanted to change the subject. He introduced his tax reform plan, but with a scarcity of details. He plans to lower the corporate tax rate from 35% to 20%. Trump, the owner of several corporations, said that he would not personally benefit from his tax reform plan. Of course, no one has any idea how much he will benefit from his own tax plan because he is the first President in forty years not to release his tax returns.
Trump's base finally turned on him. Trump wanted the establishment candidate, Luther Strange. Conservative firebrand Roy Moore ousted incumbent Strange on Tuesday night in the heated Alabama Senate race, handing still another defeat to President Trump. Moore, backed by Steve Bannon, the fired White House advisor, was a Trump-style candidate. His base voted for Moore and it was a landslide victory for the maverick Republican. Trump's political vitality within his party — counted upon by Republicans who fear primary challenges in next year’s midterm elections — suddenly stands in question, as neither his vocal campaigning nor millions of dollars from the Republican establishment could save Strange from defeat by insurgent challenger Moore.
The DNC should be taking notes. That's how a primary should be handled, with people being allowed to cast a ballot for whomever they want. See? It's really not that difficult. Oh, and by the way, I'm sure Judge Moore will have no problem working with President Trump, so you can just put your mind at ease...
Forget the dozen or so others, this time, this time for sure, without question, positively, Trump is out.
I'm sure you see the point. You are just evading it. Trump backed the other guy, the establishment candidate, Strange. That guy lost, badly, because Trump's base voted for Moore. Not only does this mean that Trump lost his base on this one, but his political capital took a hit as well. It was a severe defeat for him on top of everything else that went wrong for him during the week, the uproar he created in professional football and the defeat of his healthcare bill. The latter is dead as far as 2017 is concerned, and Trump now wants to work with the Democrats on health care. Obamacare is alive and well despite Trump's and Republicans' campaign promises to the contrary.
I am not at all sure Trump can recover from this week. Too many other things have gone wrong during his Presidency. He created out of thin air protests across the country in an American pastime, the defeat of a signature campaign promise, and finally the loss of his base in a Senatorial election and the loss of political capital. It can't get any worse than that. He has had other bad weeks, but not this bad.
Or invoking the 25th Amendment, inability to perform his duties. In this case, due to mental problems, paranoid schizophrenia combined with over the top arrogance. Has anyone noticed how often he holds press conferences on the White House lawn to the accompaniment of Marine One chopper blades and aboard Air Force One with jet engines in the background? He does that to piss off the viewing public and reporters. Except when he is entertaining a visiting dignitary, it is the only time he will allow questions from reporters. Trump is scared to death of a full blown White House press conference. He hasn't held one since February, and that one was a disaster for him, which explains his reluctance to hold another one. While under no obligation to speak to Americans in the form of press conferences as other Presidents have done, this is another possible example of his inability to perform his duties as President. It is also an example of incompetence. He obviously avoids the White House press corps because he can't handle them professionally.
So you predict President Trump will work well with a man who thinks 9/11 happened because of our godlessness, and all gays are perverse and should be locked up, and Barack Obama was a Muslim born in Kenya, and the country's problems are because we legitimized sodomy, and people should be referred to by their color "red yellow black white". Actually, now that I think about it, you're right. I wonder what Judge Ten Commandments thinks about President Trump breaking at least two of the Ten Commandments Moore holds so dear.
Moore is a looney tunes alright. It is interesting that Trump's base voted for him. Says something about his base, right. Another thread where his base is largely silent. How do you defend the indefensible?
The don't think it's indefensible. They love Moore's bigotry and conspiracy theories. It's also what appealed to them about Trump.
I can't speak for all NFL Players or Black People in general, but I'm willing to bet that most real Men get really pissed when you call their Mother a Bitch. ... and if your 260 plus of bone crushing Muscle I'm betting Mr. Twenty don't have a Barrel Of Balls to say it to their face ... even with a Alabam Crowd behind him.
There are two sides -- one disrespects our national anthem and the other respects our national anthem. The President of the United States spoke out on the side that respects our anthem. What did you expect him to do? I respect the president for speaking up for country and anthem. Is there anyone on this Forum who wants the president to disrespect the national anthem? If so speak up and show your colors and quit dancing around the issue.
This protest is about UNARMED BLACK MEN who were not doing anything wrong, who got Murdered ... NOTHING ELSE! No matter how much people who try to be outrages about other things or try to morph this into Black Gang Bangers or anything else.
Forget the dozen or so others, this time, this time for sure, without question, positively, Trump is out. He is gone I tell you, gone.
Trump had a great week. The level of delusion displayed in this post is staggering. What happened in Alabama set lightning bolts through the heart of the DC swamp and let them know that there is much more where that came from and the Maga agenda is something the American people are dead serious about having implemented. Judge Moore is Trump's guy. If you can't figure that out then you don't have the level of political sophistication required to read Trump.
So if I get a speeding ticket I can kneel for the national anthem and show disrespect for country? You do know statistics show police kill more white people than the police kill blacks. And you do know more blacks kill blacks in the hood than cops kill blacks? Maybe you don't because you think like a group rather than think for yourself and learn the facts.
Yup. A severe defeat. Just like so many of the other bad days from which Trump will never recover. Do we need to review the campaign coverage? You just love to write this guy off, don't you? Me, I take a wait and see attitude, 'cuz Trump has managed to pick himself up and dust himself off more times than I'd have thought possible... There's just no way around it. This is the one that does him in. This time, he's toast... Yup. As I stated, I think President Trump and Judge Moore will have a very good working relationship. Time will tell...
Yeah, I was talking about the other stuff, creating a crisis with football games and dividing Americans as a result, his defeat of his much ballyhooed healthcare bill, and the fact that his base turned on him.
It is pretty much safe to say that. Asking Americans to boycott football games was equally ridiculous, and, you know what? He is doubling down on the issue. He has to be incredibly stupid. Or sick.
That is not the issue. Of course, Americans respect our flag, the national anthem, and our country. That includes the nine black players who took a knee during the anthem the week before Trump opened his big mouth. In their mind, they want to improve on America, equality for all Americans, regardless of color, gender, or sexual persuasion. That was the purpose of their kneeling. It is a peaceful protest much like peaceful protests throughout our country. There is no harm in that. Apparently, Trump is opposed to that goal because he called those striving for that goal sonsabitches. Then he made the incredulous step of asking all Americans to boycott football games. Trump made a big deal of taking a knee, not the players. Kaepernick is now a hero. Before Trump opened his big yap, he was just another unemployed football player. Nice work, Mr. President. That is the issue, not respect for the flag and country. Knowing that Trump made a huge gaffe with his moronic statements, the White House is trying make respect for flag and country the issue. Clearly, it isn't. The issue is Trump's incredibly stupid comments. Now he is telling a private business how it should conduct its business. He tweeted, "The NFL has all sorts of rules and regulations. The only way out for them is to set a rule that you can't kneel during our National Anthem!" Honestly, that is funny. Trump is a joke. I'll ask you a question. Is anyone taking him seriously anymore?
Our resident forum members from the troll farm in Russia take him seriously. They toil here tirelessly every day and then collect their rubles. It's a living, anyway...
