    Perhaps they hold it in the sense that a gang or organized crime group would hold territory.

    Related story: Idealistic young female activist went to volunteer at a migrant camp set up by an organization called "No Borders", helping migrants on their journey illegally entering Europe, and was gang raped, then ordered to keep silent about it by her fellow activists who feared it would do damage to their cause

    That’s where the signaling came in. They could have gone for a bike ride in any number of places, and I guess they did, but they wanted to go back home with stories to impress their like minded friends, who would hear Tajikistan and think “oooh, exotic, scary, exciting”.

    No, not even that. ISIS has no organized presence in Tajikistan. The attackers in this case self-radicalized in the same way that some people in them United States have. Would you claim ISIS holds territory in the United States?

    Most people are fundamentally decent it's the ones that aren't that cause of the problem.

    They're making fun of them because they were talking about how good and kind all people are and ran afoul with some not so kind or good people they were proven wrong.

    They weren’t biking on a border. I think the story said they were about 50 miles south of the capital. Closest border is Uzbekistan, looks like, say 20-30 miles to the west. Afghan border was 60-70 miles to the south.

    This is a perfect example of nature weeding out the stupid.

    What may have been a better choice was not to go biking in areas where people celebrate by firing AK47's into the air and shout allahu akbar and stay home and eat a hamburger.

    Some of those wonderful, generous, nice people they met along the way most likely informed ISIS that Americans were in the area, and traveling by bicycle.

    Kinda like VC sympathizers -- noncombatants with eyes and ears.

    At least it's the naive-but-well-intentioned type of liberal, the 60's "peace and love" types. So I actually feel sorry for them, even though they fully earned their Darwin award.
