Not to defend her, but she says in the book that the dog bit her. Don't know if she had children around at the time. But a dog who bites is basically a death sentence at a shelter. Doesn't mean I would want to be the one to kill my pet. That's pretty crazy to me, but I've never lived on a farm. Doesn't seem like normal behavior to me, and even if it is, it's not a quality I support.

The dog was not a "puppy". It was 14 months old. 14 months is when you see the innate behaviors from genetics. For instance, I have an aggressive dog. A real sweet heart to everyone until she turned just past a year. Her aggressive and territorial tendencies came out at about 13/14 months. She hates dogs and is excessively territorial. Needless to say---she's on a short leash. If I was in a situation where I couldn't control her, I'd have to be responsible and put her down.

You can't train a dog out of aggression. You can't train the "Predator instinct" out of a dog. The instinct to chase and kill is ingrained . You can try---but the threat is always there. In addition, this dog was aggressive towards people. Farm dogs, roaming the area, killing chickens and perhaps elevating to chasing people is not a good thing. You hear about a pack of dogs mauling people out in the country---these are pet dogs doing what feels natural to them.

I am not hearing anyone on here with a answer to the problem... a biting dog is a liability... we have put dogs down that have bitten or tried repeatedly to bite.... OR others continually attack other dogs, one here actually picking up a smaller dog and shaking it to death, another playing for weeks with children then turning and biting another, with each one we did not even suspect it out of the blue..... what is your answer to baby boy Wild Bill crawling up to Spot and pulling his tail and poking his eye...... putting down a dog of others or personal dogs at the end of life... is one of the most heart wrenching things to do...
