The group looked at some key figures, mainly tax revenue, the current federal budget, debt and budget cuts, and divided each figure by $100 million, in an effort to break it down into simple terms that most Americans can comprehend. The group posted its findings online and came up with a household with an average family income of $21,700. But that "family" spent nearly twice that -- $38,200 -- and has an existing credit card balance of a whopping $142,710. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/09/27/tea-party-group-casts-national-debt-as-household-budget/ Wow, if my family did this, we would be sued for not paying my bills and would have declared bankruptcy.
A national budget is a bit different than a household budget. Once again the **********s continue their assault on the middle class and working poor.
Not really, take away some zero and its not so overwhelming and its much easier to see we are in big trouble as a nation.
Well if you have a household income of $21,700 don't spend tens of thousands of dollars on your credit card buying more guns than every other family on the planet combined.
Its too bad, that I, unlike the US government, can't print more money or tax more at any time in order to change that. Sure, I know the implications of printing TOO much money, but lets face it, no one in the tea party understands the complexity of failsafes involved in the US financial system, and the way that they CAN (and ALWAYS HAVE) operated in debt. There is no purpose for the government to be sitting at even, or with an overall surplus (in the budget from one year to the next its understandable, but not overall). If they ever got a surplus, they had (*)(*)(*)(*)ed well give it back to us. And if they operated at the black overall, our economy would crumble based on our "capitalists" strategy of operating our economy through debt. Do you think Donald Trump has ANYTHING paid for in advance? How many times has he run for president? And the right would vote for him against Obama every day of the week. What a joke.
Its been told a million times before: the USA gouvernement ISNT like a household. I know the trend is to make it easy and digestable and use something familiar but its BS.
Internet rule of thumb: The quickest way for someone to prove they have no clue how the American economy works is to compare it to a household budget.
You don't arden to entertains that defense spending is 7,070 in this scenario. Even if you go my the magic figured your kind like to use its still only about 13,000. Guess what. Even if you cut that to zero the politicians are spending more than they are taking from us. So doing what you seem to want still leaves us with 3,000 bucks a year going on the credit card. How do you propose we fix that? Knight
No need to do me the favor of using the $13,000 figure. Let's use your conservative numbers. Household income of $21,700 and $7,070 of credit card debt to buy more guns than the rest of the world combined. You're right that is pretty sane. I withdraw my critique sir.
It's on the same level of stupidity as trying to say that the federal government budget should be ran like a business budget.
It can't be any worse than the way it is being run now. having $14 Trillion in debt, and having added $5 Trillion in the past 4 years certainly falls into the category of "stupidity".
So your point is a "family" should abandon their disabled children, and kick their grandma and grandma out into the street when they don't work anymore? While buying Daddy steak and caviar dinners and more and more weapons, rockets and hummers than anyone else in the world? Our ONLY "big trouble" as a nation is our sick priorities of spending.
Sorry but the government is not my family anymore than the stranger down the street. It is not the governments role to take care of anyone nor burden me with that responsibility through taxation. I think most of you libs are missing the point. Most Americans are not economist so for most to be aware of the gravity of our countries debt situation, it needs to be explained in simpler terms where people can understand this problem with better perspective and I think the family budget analogy does this perfectly.
And after dramatically cutting the family income in the past, they want to cut the family income even more. Kind of stupid, when you think about it, eh?
Not when you have a financial collapse, tanking economy, and shattered housing market left over from the last Republican administration. But write your Tea Party rep and tell them to compromise and raise taxes if you're so concerned about the budget.
In other words, the Federal gov't is a babyboomer couple, living well beyond their means, on the edge of bankruptcy and divorce. _
Taxing every billion and millionaire 100% won't fix the problem because we spend more than we can take in. K.I.S.S - its the spending stupid (not you literally )
Naw, most of the money went to support drug addict adult children with several babies born out of wedlock. _
People have a problem understanding the difference between real spending and deficit spending. Obama has not spent that much money in a relative basis to any of the previous President's. In fact he has spent half as much as Reagan did at this time.
