Just to note, this would not get rid of the electoral college. The U.S. constitution allows for this:

    Article II, Section I:
But it would certainly have a great impact on the issues that get played out during Presidential election years. For example, rather than focus on smaller states, candidates would try to focus on areas with large populations (cities which typically vote democrat but have a higher number of republican voters compared to small conservative towns).

I would be in favor of this. I think it would make people feel their vote actually matters more. For example, in a state that's usually blue or red, you may feel your vote won't matter much. But that changes with this altogether. Of course in order for this to work, all states would need to be on board (not just the majority).

Oh..my...God! I'm shaking in my boots. You mean people are going to find another way to decide elections? Noooooo!

Are Republicans afraid they can't win a popular vote. If they don't that is sad and if they do what are they worried about?

Well I think McConnell brings up interesting points about fraud and re-counts. If something like this were implemented, there would definitely have to be AT LEAST some kind of national consensus on voting formats and data. And dealing with re-counts will be important too. Votes need to be verified to avoid fraud somehow (which is where the common format and data would come in for historical and statistical analysis to bring up red flags).

There is no magical wide spread voter fraud going on and trust me if the Republicans thought they could get away with voter fraud they would use it to their advantage as would the Dems. That how you know its not a real issue.

I agree. One citizen, one vote. The electoral system is a ridiculous game that has politicians pandering and calculating rather than presenting ideas and developing a national consensus on issues.
Dump it and simply use the national vote.
Forget about the weird little voting machines that are open to fraud.
Everyone gets a sheet of paper and a pen and they circle the candidate of their choice, or write one in. No funny chads or dimples or butterfly ballots or any other crapola designed to make voting more complicated.
