Now we support Israel because of the cockamamie religious right in this country who don't want to miss an opportunity to convert the Jews to Christianity at rapture time. I'm sure there was this but I truly believe, at least in the US, there was a substantial amount of guilt about the Nazis' mass murder of the Jews, and much support for a Jewish homeland. Plus, more cynically, when prior to the UN vote Dean Acheson warned Truman about the potential problems a European, socialist, theocracy in the middle of the Arab world might present to regional stability, Truman said something like he had millions of Jewish constituents, but not a single Muslim one.

You're right about the Christian loony influence on current US policy. But I believe if the following steps were taken, things would settle down within a generation:

1. The US guarantees the existence of Israel, including military intervention to preserve the Jewish State.
2. Israel scraps its nuclear arsenal.
3. Israel and the Palestinians negotiate a two state solution behind mutually agreed to borders and including full Palestinian sovereignty, with no conditional Israeli intervention.

I believe both would prosper so greatly from this settlement that borders would become irrelevant after a generation or two.

 

Why should they GUARANTEE it, unless they are also prepared to offer that same guarantee to every single country or state, on the entire planet?

And what happens if they decide they no longer want to formally guarantee it?

Let Israel stand or fall by itself, once a two state solution is established, like other countries have to do.

 

To remove the Israeli government's argument that they face an existential threat from their enemies.

I agree with all you say. I'm suggesting a guarantee that removes the Israeli government's argument that they face an existential threat that's a barrier to starting serious negotiations with the Palentinians.

 

Israel is important to the US because they are a strategic ally in the Middle East and offer a counterweight to Islamic extremism. They are scientifically, economically and technologically advanced and they are a western style democracy similar to that of the US.
