It is quite possible that by 2014, Scotland may move into a new phase of independance from the United Kingdom, thus ending the union that has existed, since the 1700's.

In 1998, Scotland did win it's own Parliment, however, it does not have full powers, with many issues being reserved to London, pretty much all the really major one's, if I am being honest. Even those that are devolved to Scotland, are then naturally influenced by what national budgets are set in London.

As I have grown older, I have seen the potential and benefits for a proud little country, with fantastic history, like Scotland, to leave the Union. Every nation's people should have the right to full self determination, imo.

The present Gov in London, which is a coalition of the Tories and the Lib Dems (with the Lib Dems really just decoration), will spend the next two years, or whatever it turns out to be, before an offical referendum, literally using fearmongering to persuade the Scottish people not to vote in favour of them leaving the union. That is a given. Despite the fact that the Tories have always been esp punative to Scots and Scottish industry, they do not want Scotland to leave the union, because, apart from anything else, there is the small matter over Scotland and N Sea oil.

I see no reason at all why a country like Scotland cannot be independent, and move forward into the third millenium, on it's own.

There are many other nations with our land mass and population, that do just fine, and there is no logical reason why Scotland need be any different.

While it is clearly true that there are lots of cultural similarities between the Scots and English, there are also differences.

    There must be.

Why else would the Tories never have gained a toe hold among the majority of the Scottish public, while they have in England?

That surely represents a key difference, doesn't it?

And I am certain that any fair minded person would agree that it is not really on for 5 million people to be Governed by a leader they do not want, nor did they vote for, and a party that Scotland does not like.

Technically, the SNP are the Goverment of Scotland, however, as I have said, most key issues are reserved to the Tory Gov, down in London, so they have limited influence, in practice.

I hope you get independence but I fear old sectarianism will rear it's ugly head and Unionists will vote to stay Britsh.

Freedom for Colorado! Let's secede! I'm tired of paying federal taxes, and what does federal government doing for Colorado? Zilch. We'll be just fine on our own...

LOL, they want a two-state solution in the UK and a one state solution in the Middle East. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Oh well, good luck anyway, the UK is already irrelevant, it will be just as irrelevant if broken up into tiny countries.

I think there is one obstacle.

Many people fear change, even if it can be shown that change may be for the better!

You likely know people like that, in your personal life, if they just embraced one change, their life would be much better, but fear holds them back.

The Unionists and Tories will exploit that to the max.

At the moment, polls suggest that there would not be sufficient support, albeit there is significant support. That is fine, that can change for the better, because it will be around two years before the Scottish people went to the polls, so there is time to really work that.

There is also something that could work in our favour though.

The Tory Gov in London may well be the best weapon to persuade the people of Scotland to vote for full autonomy.

    Why so?

Well, as mentioned, English Tories have traditionally been the most harsh to Scottish people and Scottish needs. We saw this with Thatcher, and now that we have another Tory PM, David Cameron, we see that same attitude again. In other words, over the next two years, things are going to get pretty crap for parts of this country, but the part that the Tories crap on most is Scotland, because they know that no matter what, the Scots never vote for them in big number anyway.

The more the Tories do that over the next two years, the more Scots will be won over to embrace self determination, imo.

Cameron and his media machine will try to convince the Scottish people that if we let go of the Union, that the economy will be terrible, and jobs will be shed.

Unlike now eh, where there is just so much job creation, and the economy is so great, I am personally handing out £20 notes to the homeless.

Did Cameron say to Salmond that he effectively needed HIS permission, to have a referendum? And did Salmond retort by saying that was not the case, he only needd the formal permission of the Queen?

    What old sectarianism?

You are not suggesting that a relatively small number of Rangers fans can influence a vote like this, are you?

Scotland is a beautiful country that is very rich in culture. Although the Scots seem to be very anti-American I still would love to see it govern itself one day! I still very much so enjoyed my time spent there.

Maybe it was just you

We get LOTS of Americans to my city, every year.

They always come back, and most say that the locals are v friendly.

Perhaps they initially form an impression, based on the dubious activities of your state, then when they see the person, not the actions of their state, they come around?

Four or five it will be, but we all belong here, you see. If the Germans had occupied we'd all be fighting them still, obviously. As you know, the nazis occupying Palestine want a single Master-Race state and a couple of waterless Bantustans for concentration camps.

Scotish nationalism is just as reactionary as British Nationalism ,if you think the Scotish capitialist Class is goin to be any less savage ,venal and brutal then the English ,then take a deep breath .

the only form of government that will defend and advance the Scottish 'Peoples"and by peoples ,I refer to the Working Class and poor.

Is a Workers government that nationalises the resourses and immediately turns to European and Global Proletariet.

There can never be a stand alone independent Scottish Nation 400 years of interconnectedness ,political ,economic and cultural dosen't desolve by a Vote no matter in what form .

Ireland has been fighting for independence for a similar amount of time ,and remains colonised ,the nationalist movement their has failed the people of ireland repeatly with bloody repression being the price .

For if a successionist movement challenges what England sees as its Historical Commonwealth is threatened seriously then War will ensure ,civil war .

Can Scotland go it alone ,NO that is a Utopia on the planet of globalised everything,it just would not have the Economy of scale .

If it unified with the United Socialist States of Europe ,that would be an Entirely different question .

Who wants to live in these things called Nations that bring ruin upon the mass of the population whilst the top 1% ,enrich themselves at our expense.

and who is the enemy of the Scotish ,English ,Irish ,Welsh peoples ,lets start with the stinking Monarchy and the Queens government and work down.

No I stand for the Unity of the British Working class in a united Revolutionary struggle against the acient regime in the foul unUnited KINGDOM.

Forward to sucession from capitialism for the international proletariet ,we have no Nation to defend and plenty to overthrow,to complete the process of globalisation ,with the unification Politically of all humanity against Imperialism .

The Westminster System is bursting at the seams ,cracking up ,why go backwards and through it a lifeline with a Nationalist perspective that gets us in the crap we presently are experiencing ?

National government for Scotland ,NO,Workers government for all Gt Britian, YES unification of all workers of Europe !

based on the exproiation of the wealth both Social and personal of the 1% YES with bells on .

Progression not regression ,forget the Utopia of the Scotish National independence ,join the reality of the World Socialist Revolution, first stop is the Queen and her Capitialist government .

Everyone seems to think with the collapse of the USSR ,that the working Class as a political entity disappeared ,we have news for those holding such silly thoughts .

Will this 'Nation of independent scots 'look to repeating what it did to Ireland all those years ago, will it side agaianst England for Irish national Independence.

What are you going to use as a Military against nuclear armed England???

But, philxx, did the breakaway of the Irish Republic strengthen or weaken the forces you dislike? Certainly DeValera's clerical regime hurt the Irish working class, but it weakened Imperialism very seriously indeed by succeeding. I don't think it is an either/or, but a place to use one's intelligence - in a way that Connolly didn't, I think. For my money, if my own country broke away from Cameron's Britain it would strengthen rather than weaken the Class - as long as we did it without illusions. We are not having much joy as it is, that I can assure you.
