i hear, almost continuously, that employers are having trouble finding workers. how can we explain this story?

Florida Worker Applied to 60 Entry-Level Jobs, Got One Interview (businessinsider.com)

Joey Holz recalled first hearing complaints about a labor shortage last year when he called to donate convalescent plasma at a clinic near Fort Myers, Florida.

"The guy went on this rant about how he can't find help and he can't keep anybody in his medical facility because they all quit over the stimulus checks," Holz told Insider. "And I'm like, 'Your medical professionals quit over $1,200 checks? That's weird.'"

Over the next several months, he watched as a growing chorus of businesses said they couldn't find anyone to hire because of government stimulus money. It was so ubiquitous that he joined a "No one wants to work" Facebook group, where users made memes deriding frustrated employers.

it is a great article that describes this man's futile search for an entry level job. he applied for over 60 in september, all "no experience necessary" or "will train" from businesses that were complaining of having a hard time finding employees.

i likee the business that advertised "$10 per hour" but then offered him $8.65 for part time work that he had to be available for at any time.

is there really a labor shortage? is it really caused by unemployment insurance? if there is a shortage of labor supply, why do wages not meet the demand curve as taught in economics 101?

Applied for 60, gets one interview....sorry, the premise smells like a dead skunk on a hot day...that aside, as I posted on another thread here in my spot the "Now Hiring" signs seen everywhere now state "Now Hiring MINORS". Every store I frequent shows the "labor shortage", un-stocked shelves, unmanned checkout lanes, dirty facilities, a couple of fast foods have cut their hours of operation. And ALL advertise starting wages of $12-$15....now why people have got it in their heads that entry level jobs should pay the same as brain surgeons I do not know, but I DO know around here jobs are going unfilled, AND we weren't wiped out by that which I have vowed not to comment on here anymore.

In my line of work we have a recruitment side. It's nearly impossible to find workers in the lower tiers...restaurants, and workers for small businesses for instance. Engineers, architects, accountants and skilled trades are easy.
The only restaurants that are fully staffed seem to be Mexican eateries.

Yes I believe the extended benefits hurt not only the economy and businesses but the workers themselves...having to explain a long hole in their work history to a potential employer who frankly is looking for people with a work ethic. During the period of extended benefits my daughter sent in an application online to a bookstore and received a call a few minutes later telling her she was hired, lol.

There are a number of things to consider. We've had people apply for the multitude of positions we have open, from entry level and up. Here are some of the reasons they were not hired.

    Criminal record.
    Over qualified.
Job hopper (6 months or less at multiple positions)
    No transportation.
Scheduling requirements that would prevent proper coverage.
    Bad attitude.

Even minors, no experience, well above MW. People chose the idea that exposure, masking requirements, more money on the programs (inclusive of assistance programs) were a better deal for them.

It's going to take a very long time to fill the labor holes.

The left will stop at nothing to further their lies. I mean even the Biden administration agrees that there are job openings everywhere. Labor facts from economists and the government also prove it. To try to spin a severe labor shortage into there really isn't a labor shortage at all has no credibility whatsoever.

I propose a solution that helps everyone
Trade liberals to Mexico for Mexicans at a 1 to 1 ratio
They can save Mexico with their superior liberal teachings and can also help the people they claim to care so much about
In exchange we will have more people with a good work ethic who are happy to be here
I say we start with people on the legal immigration waiting list
    Everyone wins!
Damn, why did I never run for office? This is a great idea

    This is the problem:

The employers have gotten used to having the upper hand in hiring negotiations for at least two decades. Now, that, possibly only for a short while, the shoe is on the other foot, employers are having a hard time changing learned habits, they still think they have the upper hand when they don't. Treating job applicants with respect would go a long way, but that's hard to do, when employers learned over decades that job applicants are a dime a dozen and are expendable commodities in huge supply. Thanks to decades of supply side economics.
