I've never heard that sentiment expressed quite like that. Why do you say highest common denominators? I don't know if I ever thought of it like that before. I guess I always thought of striving for competing fully developed policies, ala Lincoln v Douglass debates. But, really most elections are decided in the middle ... which points to seeking highest common denominators.

Anyway, it's an interesting way of looking at it, I don't know I've ever heard it expressed that way before.
