I agree with the premise. The parallels are disturbing. Hitler invented a myth of a special German past. Many in the USA cling to our own historical myth. Reagan personified it. He, and many others, thought the good 'ol USA was a Frank Capra movie.
I think Full Metal Jacket cuts closer to the bone.
