That wasnt our only interest, just our main interest. Morality aside, a failed democracy willl make things much more difficult for us in the future. So we have an incentive to make sure it succeeds.

We wanted to control the Iraqis, and the perfect way to do that is to install a democracy that is completely independant of us. Makes sense to me.
