Isn't it obvious? It's gotta be nuclear war, combined with collateral damage from conventional war fighting the self-proliferating machines which are at civil war with the zombies. Since zombies can't die (again), they will undoubtedly infect humanity with virus and bacteria, creating dire need for medicine perpetuated by chemical plants contributing to global warming and natural disasters. The hand of God will send alien invaders to nuke the planet. The debris will then be eaten by Godzilla.

Yeah, that's gotta be it.
