Default This cartoon nails it.

As most people, the exaggerated reaction of many Muslims following the publication of the infamous cartoons irritated me. How can rational adults in the twenty-first century react in such a manner, I wondered. The question haunted me, it still does.

But still, the cartoon above nails it. We so often proudly claim we have freedom of speech, but it’s untrue. For instance, “Holocaust revisionism” in Austria is considered a crime, and the punishment is severe, at this very moment a British historian, charged with Holocaust revisionism is awaiting a sentence… most likely ten years.

I’d like to stress the point, that this should not be interpreted as support for Holocaust deniers and revisionists, I don’t denounce them, nor do I support them. For me, personally, the anti Holocaust-denial laws do not form a major limitation in the exercise of my freedom, I do not feel a constant urge to deny the Holocaust or claim that the number of deaths were much lower. If “six million” is so holy to Jews, then as a reasonable God-fearing man, I’m willing to leave it untouched. However, this is not the issue here, the issue isn’t whether 6 million Jews died or not, the issue is that when we claim that nothing holy can remain untouched in the West, we are lying our asses off and being bind hypocrites while doing so, since every society, yes even secular, free and enlightened ones like ours, has its taboos, and even the West punishes those who do not respect these taboos.
