You really are a glass-half-empty guy. The purpose is to allow people of varying faiths to get along. It is a way for people to keep to their individual faiths without getting into nasty fights, also allowing them to get together for common causes (such Beastly acts as <gasp> charity). At what point are they trying to establish a world religion? All they are doing, which might very well conflict with your motives, is keeping different faiths from destroying and fighting with one another when they do have common ground.
But of course it's the same argument you have with the UN and with democracy itself. In your mind, it seems consensus is oppression and slavery. Funny. I'd prefer consensus to war and hostility any day. Amazing how we in the West sometimes take it for granted.
