If he did this after being elected, that'd be one thing. He didn't. He grew up (well, except for the alcoholism thing....).
Ted Danson was 46 when he pulled his blackface stunt. No real excuse there, even though the fact that he was dating Whoopi kind of defused the "racist!" thing.
Funny thing, the offensive part about blackface was never merely blacking one's face: it was the exclusion of blacks from those roles, and the stereotypically racist portrayals that accompanied the roles. But the association is strong enough that it takes a real insensitivity to do blackface, for any reason.

he may have been in his 20's, but he did this AFTER he was elected. Pretty shameful for an elected official. I don't think he's changed much either, still an alcoholic.
