If you're a parent, how would you like to get the following letter:
Dear Sir or Madam...Your child is fat...Please do something about it, or else. Sincerely, The British Government... In England, parents of overweight kids are being sent official warnings as part of a government crackdown on childhood obesity...Pre-teen children are being weighed at school with the results becoming part of their permanent record... A British Department of Health spokesman said: "We need to take this farther..." How much "farther" does he want to take this: All the way to a Fat Kid Concentration Camp Why can't parents weigh their own kids? Make their own decisions...Adjust their children's diets...Let them eat junk foods, or not...Or, put them in a sports program if they want to...After all, government doesn't have the right to raise someone else's kids...Do they? So far this nutty idea hasn't made its way to America...But, it's being talked about... The War On Fat takes us to America where anti-junk food crusader Harold Goldstein told The Sacramento Bee in 2004 that "Americans simply can't be trusted with the complex task of feeding themselves." If we can't feed ourselves then whom? There are dozens of liberty-robbing do-gooders who want warning labels on candy bars...This Eat Healthy Or Else crowd has already fined a public school in Austin, Texas for selling potato chips... These food monitors, backed by trial attorneys, are proposing a fat tax on sodas with the proceeds funding an obesity task force... Now does this mean they'll be hunting down fat people, or trying to cure them...? joewebb WAR ON FAT PODCAST |

I am from England have never heard or read about this 'fat letters' story at all and I keep up with the news regularly so as much as I dispise the current government, I find it hard to believe, especially when throughout their years in charge they have been focused on public pleasing speeches and aesthetics- in fact, the only time I have heard them address this issue recently involved a big Blair speech in how the governments perserverence into sporting endeavour for children will solve said problem. Personally I don't think they would risk the bad press, especially with Cameron ahead in the opinion polls. To be honest though, I think it's about time they gave the parents some responsibility and given that a conservative government was the only one with the balls to do so and it's been so long since they've been in power maybe it's time for an extreme measure like that. And maybe that's the kind of wake up call parents need before their children turn into scallies- roaming the streets looking for fights (only when numbers are on their side, mind), living off benefits and having kids for even more benefits.
Like Cameron says- it stars with the family. And by god a government that aren't afraid of saying such things. |
