Default Pure understandable tax

In the US as I am led to believe, everyone is taxed the same on everything, and it's a nice easy calculation 10% lovin' it. In England they put VAT on top of everything and it’s usually always included in the prices you see so no calculation is necessary. However, on things like wages and bank interest the tax varies according to how much you earn.

I don't like to admit ignorance, but when it is necessary I will. I'm only 16 and I have just started receiving letters from various organisations informing me that the government would like my money with a nice, completely incomprehensible table informing me how much money the government want. After several feeble attempts at reading the documents that seem to require some form of special qualification to understand and alleviate the need for a complaints department by ensuring that said document leaves the readers mind in such as slush that your not quite sure what it is you wanted to question. I would very much appreciate someone that could explain, in some language that does not require any form of special degree in quantum mechanics to read, how exactly the English system works and why the hell it hasn't been Americanised along with everything else!!
