Default General Pestraeus comments on coming report to Congress

General David Petraeus reveals plans to scale back Iraq troops

General David Petraeus, the US commander in Iraq, is drawing up plans to pull more troops out of the country after July on the back of a sharp drop in attacks and long-awaited progress on the political front.

The suggestions, which will depend upon conditions on the ground, are due to be presented as part of a new report on Iraq to George Bush, the US President, towards the end of next month, which will be put before Congress by early April.

“We have been tasked to provide input to the Central Command, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the [Defence] Secretary and the President on the way ahead, obviously on recommendations with respect to further draw-downs beyond those that will be complete by July,” General Petraeus told The Times.

He was referring to a withdrawal of more than 20,000 troops (over one quarter of America’s combat forces in Iraq) that was announced following a previous report to Washington last September. They were deployed as part of a military surge to tackle escalating sectarian killings and other attacks in and around Baghdad.

Asked whether troop levels by the end of 2008 would be less than the force of some 130,000 that will be left following the current reduction, General Petraeus said: “Yes”, emphasising, however, that security conditions at the time would dictate the size and rate of the pullout to prevent gains from being compromised.

“We have a range, but that is not something I would be prepared to share with you at this point in time. We have a range based on various situations.”

Except according to some liberals he is a traitor. I'm sure that label will be broken out again any time he says something they don't like.

Yeah...I actually hope they do that because the backlash they got last year was big.

You might notice the most information filled posts about Iraq here are often the least commented on as well.

The military operation was a genial move to spread democracy and freedom in the middle east. But, Bush approached the project and carried out the plan in a different fashion. He listened to the paleoconservatives and arrogant neo-cons who wrote science fiction books before they became political think-tanks. Bolton?!hahahhhaa. LOL
His dad did not have the balls to do it!!!! Was Dubya aware of the possible mess?

Democracy in the Middle East is imperative. It seems as only Israel has adapted into democratic and capitalist system.
The rest of the Arab countries are either economically poor or corrupted, run by rich sheiks where majority of their citizens live in extreme poverty or under subhuman conditions which it has caused the radicalization of their societies.

Before we start thinking about withdrawing from the Iraq, we need to stop depending our energy supplies on Saudis who are spreading their dangerous backward-minded ideology of wahabism.

Iraq was the mos convenient place to start at. From the get-go, the issue was politicized starting from the Pentagon officials to the lowest scum - of course, members of other anal degenerates of the right and left. It's sad how much the image of the left and democrats/right and republicans have been destroyed by these anal degenerates.

Withdrawing troops from Iraq is a wrong move. It will become a heaven for the terrorists.
Vietnam is a different story. It felt under communist realm and it became an isolated country. The assessment results did not give any strategic importance to the United States.
Iraq could become an isolated country, but terrorism is not an Isolated issue.

Iran is already sponsoring the Iraqi Shiaats, fueling more political fraction among the leaders of the Iraqi government.

Iraq is a large country. Democracy is doable in there. Need to have a different approach.
First find out why they're killing each other.
Secondly, what do they want? Can we impose the democracy on them?

As far as I know, democracy can't be imposed on people. But, we can show them what democracy brings to the future of their kids.

It would require an entire new plan and bi-partisan group introducing a new political assessment that would bring peace and stability in Iraq. No president of the US will return troops back to the States. At least I am not fooling myself because these current candidates would not do so.
Iran, Russia, China and other countries would move in and take Iraq under their own orbit if the United States withdraws its troops.
They need to create a federal state of Iraq. The three groups control their own territories while respecting the federal integrity of Iraq. This one must be imposed.
The US need to reduce its military presence while influences the political and economical reforms in their government.

Shall we try this or just withdraw and let the place become a heaven for suicide bombers?..
It's a tough answer. We don't want our sons and daughters die in vain at the same time. Every day, the American soldiers get killed.A tragic frustration everyone wants to resolve.

I couldn't get a brighter view of what was going on there until a journalist, a conservative one, broke the ranks with his own ideology and revealed the mistakes we made in Iraq.
A long article was published in the Atlantic monthly, 2 years ago....

Post ....

Most liberals, I mean ALL liberals today think
the Iraq war is a lost cause, and that it's not
part of the liberal agenda to have a regime
change in Iraq. Yet this clip I found of Clinton's
Secretary of State (Madeleine Albright )
said the opposite of what the liberals are crying
out today.

Can someone shed more light on this? explain
to me why they have shifted from the views on
Iraq and would now rather just for sake the
Iraqi people? and why now they think it should
have been done faster? I have a lot of questions
on this.

David Petraeus and Madeleine Albright are both Jews, they support the radical Zionist agenda of the state of Israel and couldn't care less about what the useful liberal idiots believe as long as they are still stupid enough to believe in their lies.
