I don't know the history of the word, but if it was as offensive to blacks then as it is now, I say use it.

If the word was not as offensive as it is now, I say substitute it with another word that matches the historical impact. In maintaining the historical accuracy of the word, you could really screw up the historical impression of the guy using it. The latter is more important.
