Joseph Kennedy (JFK's father) was closely connected to the mob (from his bootlegging days) and asked them to help his son get elected. Frank Sinatra did likewise. In return JFK unleashed his brother Robert on organized crime. Let's just say they where non-too-pleased. Any chance that organized crime syndicates, when betrayed, might have the violater killed ?!

Funny how quiet Dems get when you mention the rumrunner's son and his little dalliance with Judith Exner, who was also tight with mob boss Sam Giancana.
Sam Giancana ran the mob's Havana operations. I say, yes, you're probably right---this is far more likely than the Soviets or even some extreme-right group of the era. (A few of the Texas boys on the fringes of the Hunt Brothers empire come to mind.) But in any event, cutting off "Cuber," (as that
vastly-overrated sybarite JFK called it) had a
severely damaging effect on organized crime---probably as bad as the feds getting all that information by tracking the Appalachia meeting of the crime bosses.
Logic says, the two Kennedys essentially took the high road on the mafia, against all expectations. Hoover (until nearly the very end) disavowed even the
existence of La Cosa Nostra (or its offshoots). Imagine his chagrin that his bosses both felt differently---knowing the mob a lot better than Dems are ever likely to let on.
