Mind-reading machines are real!

Scientists have developed a method for decoding the patterns in visual areas of the brain in order to determine what someone has seen.
The tool used by a team of neuroscientists at the University of California, Berkeley, is called 'functional magnetic resonance imaging', or fMRI. This device is a scanner that detects minute flows of blood within the brain, thus highlighting which cerebral areas are triggered by touch, sound and light.
Scientists tested the method with two volunteers as they viewed a series of images.
For the first step, the volunteers (who were two members of the team) looked at 1,750 photographs while being scanned by fMRI.
In the second phase, the volunteers looked at a new set of 120 images; the fMRI machine program correctly identified what they were looking at up to 92 percent of the time.
This 'mind-reading' technique may allow experts to visualize people's dreams and memories in the future.
According to scientists, the technique could be useful also in understanding the mental state of a person who is in a coma.
However, it inevitably raises the fear that such technology could be used to interrogate a person for thought crimes (as George Orwell explains in 1984), invading people's privacy and bringing about a dystopian horror.
