IMO, a laissez-faire approach would end up damaging the economy, cause social problems, and possibly endanger basic freedoms (bad political agendas could arise from uneducated supporters)

Well I did say it was my opinion. I take it you're a libertarian of some sort?

What roles do you think the government should play? Military? Roads? Subsidizing cheese and wine manufacturers?

First of all bad political agendas can come from educated people as well as uneducated people. In fact most uneducated people, poorly educated people, and most people in general dont even involve themselves with politics at all. Thats not to say that people should not be educated, its just to prove that ur point is not correct.

Secondly, the government should only play a role in the basic neccessities of the citizens such as military and roads. When people say that the current credit problems we are haveing are because of the deregulation of the economy, they are totally incorrect. Its not the governments fault people buy homes on adjustable mortgage rates they could barely pay in the first place, its the people's fault. People need to learn how to manage their finances some how, and babying them along making sure they never go through any hardship will not help them.

In the modern globalized world I think the best way is to have a mix of capitalism and socialism. Yes I am a liberal and you can tear me a new one.
