Default As Promised

Ok MasTequila, as promised here is the "why" in your President question. First my fellow Reaganite, there are the more obvious reasons. Of any President in my life or whom I have studied, Reagan's ideas / philosophy most closely matches my personal values. My family, especially my grandparents, were absolutely in love with Reagan. They did the dance of joy when he defeated Carter in 1980, literally. The manner in which he spoke. It was comforting, reassuring, and inspiring at the same time. His stance against the Evil Empire. The foresight to end the cold war by confronting our enemies and displaying our strength and resolve as a nation. Then there is his ability to transcend everything I just said and make the leader of that evil empire a friend. That speaks to the man in many ways. The respect he commanded even from his enemies and political adversaries. SDI his vision and a reality today.(The space junk we just shot down). I could go on endlessly so I will try to wrap it up.... The deeply personal reason that I refereed to earlier: In the early 80's I as a pre-teen concerned like many people about nuclear annihilation. We had drills to the fallout shelter in the basement of my school. Then came 11/20/1983 the TV movie "The Day After"
You can Google it, but in sum it was about Nuclear Holocaust scared the crap out of me. You see I was not afraid of the boogie man only the all to real dangers. I found the comfort I needed in President Regan's words, actions, and demeanor. I had the sense that we were in good hands. We desired peace but if it were to be war, even the unthinkable war, we would face it with courage and dignity. I offer you his words "If history teaches anything, it teaches self-delusion in the face of unpleasant facts is folly. We see around us today the marks of our terrible dilemma--predictions of doomsday, antinuclear demonstrations, an arms race in which the West must, for its own protection, be an unwilling participant. At the same time we see totalitarian forces in the world who seek subversion and conflict around the globe to further their barbarous assault on the human spirit. What, then, is our course? Must civilization perish in a hail of fiery atoms? Must freedom wither in a quiet, deadening accommodation with totalitarian evil? Sir Winston Churchill refused to accept the inevitability of war or even that it was imminent. He said, "I do not believe that Soviet Russia desires war. What they desire is the fruits of war and the indefinite expansion of their power and doctrines. But what we have to consider here today while time remains is the permanent prevention of war and the establishment of conditions of freedom and democracy as rapidly as possible in all countries."
After reading "The Regan Diaries" there is no doubt about it Ronald Regan is a hero to me and has had a profound influence on my values and the way I view the world. I wrap up this verbose posting with two of my favorite quotes:"And in all of that time I won a nickname, "The Great Communicator." But I never thought it was my style or the words I used that made a difference: it was the content. I wasn't a great communicator, but I communicated great things, and they didn't spring full bloom from my brow, they came from the heart of a great nation--from our experience, our wisdom, and our belief in the principles that have guided us for two centuries. They called it the Reagan revolution. Well, I'll accept that, but for me it always seemed more like the great rediscovery, a rediscovery of our values and our common sense."......."And whatever else history may say about me when I'm gone, I hope it will record that I appealed to your best hopes, not your worst fears, to your confidence rather than your doubts. My dream is that you will travel the road ahead with liberty's lamp guiding your steps and opportunity's arm steadying your way." It has and you always did Mr. President. Thank you and rest in peace.
