Here is what I have for things that go "bump" in the night. A Remington 870 Police Magnum. My first gun. Just received it on Monday. I have never fired a shotgun before, its going to be interesting and exciting when I buy ammo and get out to the gravel pit.

Just remember to run 00 buck if you are going to use it for home protection.

Interviewer:- Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?
You're equipping them to become violent killers.

Jones:- Well, you're equipped to be a prostitute but you're not one are you?

Yea, I'm gonna use 00 buck for home defense probably in a low-recoil version because im new and have a small stature. I'm gonna make sure I get out practicing at least a few times a month, and also bring some of my friends to get them involved in shooting. And I also have to practice quick loading because its illegal to store a loaded gun in Canada.

Whats the deal with #4 buck. I heard of some police departments up here in Canada witching to number 4 buck for their patrol shotguns because of fears of over penetration with 00 buck.

That is because of the findings from this test, and a few others like it.
http://www.tacticalshotgun.ca/ballistics_shotgun.html

The problem is they did no live animal testing to compare results. Ballistics gel is an ok model for testing terminal ballistics, but it is not as good as flesh and bone. The results the FBI crime lab and the tests MARCORSYSCOM (sorry it is not open source) came up with said that #4 buck (not #4 bird) will not reliably penetrate bone and flesh to a depth that will regularly hit vitals from all angles, even at fairly close ranges. They cause very lage shallow wounds that will not reliably take down someone that is on something. And even someone that is not on something, but is determined may be able to push through the pain.

Gel just does not give you all the answers, it has to be done along side live animal testing to yield accurate results. PETA hates it, but if killing a few hogs saves a few humans then I am all for it.

Could 00 over penetrate? Yes. But it is highly unlikely that it will retain a velocity that could be lethal.

Correct. Jello does not do a very good job as a test medium. Too bad too. California is full of PETA fanatics that keep us from testing the way we should.
