The Illuminati, a secret society of free-thinking intellectuals, disappeared as an actual organization 221 years ago, but that hasn't stopped the wild conspiracy theories:

Back when they did exist, who illuminated a new Illuminatus? Did they have special study programs or reading lists for Illuminatus novitiates?
Well, it probably resembled what one has to do to be a Free Mason, since...

On May 1, 1776, in Bavaria, Dr. Adam Weishaupt, a professor of Canon Law at Ingolstadt University and a former Jesuit, formed a secret society called the Order of the Illuminati within the existing Masonic lodges of Germany. Since Masonry is itself a secret society, the Illuminati was a secret society within a secret society.

This describes how a person becomes a Free Mason:

well if you have read Dan Brown's Angels and Demons, perhaps you would believe that one had to follow the path of illumination, a puzzle leading to the "altars of science" and the illuminati hide out. its all just fiction though...
